Monaco CM Aurelien Tchouameni

Yves Bissouma was on my list of targets to potentially replace Gini Wijnaldum in a previous post, and he is still an excellent option for Liverpool. But not only did I want to go in a different direction after adding more about Houssem Aouar and Youri Tielemans, but I’m also aware that the Brighton man’s price may not be worth it for the Reds. Look, if the Reds can get Aouar or Ryan Gravenberch for close to 30 million euros, why spent 50 million on Bissouma?

An alternative is the more impressive Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco. There are so many great young midfielders in Ligue 1, with Eduardo Camavinga of Rennes soaking up the most attention. And he will be readily available this summer with one year left on his deal. In my mind, Tchouameni is just as impressive, despite being a little older, and has really established himself as a gem for Niko Kovac.

Tchouameni did a lot to support the fearsome striker duo of Kevin Volland and Wissam Ben Yedder, as Monaco were sneaky title contenders in Ligue 1. The 21-year-old French defensive midfielder is so active on both ends of the pitch and can dictate play, but he really loves joining attacks the most.

He averaged 3.5 tackles per game and 1.7 interceptions per game in Ligue 1 this past season, making him one of the best ball-winners in Europe’s top five leagues. Tchouameni added five goal contributions and drew 1.7 fouls per game on the ball.

It looks like Tchouameni is the next big thing and someone who could be a versatile, high-upside addition to Jurgen Klopp’s side. I’d consider him an unlikely signing, since any big signing in midfield is unlikely. But he is 100 percent someone Kopites should consider watching closely this year.
