Liverpool’s midfield frailties were highlighted yet again in Sunday’s draw at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea, where James Milner and Jordan Henderson put in lackluster efforts in the middle of the park.

Now, the Reds are said to be circling Borussia Monchengladbach talent Denis Zakaria. However, they will face stiff competition from the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Manchester United to the signature of the talented midfielder.

Zakaria has been linked with Liverpool for some time now but a January move for the Swiss international may prove to be Jurgen Klopp’s best shot at capturing Zakaria before a likely switch to one of the Bundesliga’s top two teams in summer.

Yet again it is being said that Liverpool won’t be making any moves in the January transfer window, a familiar tone that has been plaguing fans for a number of seasons.

Although, with Manchester City’s ever-widening gap at the top of the Premier League, reinforcements clearly need to be made to keep up the pace.

Not to mention, Zakaria fits the bill for the type of player Liverpool should be investing in, mainly operating in defensive midfield, the Gladbach maestro can also play further forward in the number 8 role. With quality in abundance and plain versatility, a move for Zakaria seems like a no-brainer.

The Gladbach star will be available for free in the summer and has already told Sporting Director Max Eberl of his plans to leave the Bundesliga club once his contract runs out.

This presents an opportunity to pounce in the January transfer window, with Gladbach looking to get what they can out of a deal before they lose their prized asset on a free transfer.
