Liverpool FC has officially arrived at the two-week break in good standing this month after Virgil van Dijk returned to arguably, save this season. After a battle with COVID-19 in December, the Reds’ star defender returned in Matchweek 20 after the team struggled without him on numerous fronts. His recent presence has been felt as he scored the opening goal in the 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace this past Sunday.

However, VVD exemplified his worth to the club more after a specific feat.

When Virgil van Dijk scores for Liverpool, greatness occurs.

Van Dijk’s recent goal against Crystal Palace is a microcosm of a more extraordinary feat that makes him one of the best in the team’s history.

Simply put, whenever the Dutchman scores, the Reds win. He is the only member of Liverpool FC to accomplish this feat while also winning each match. When you think about all the great players that have graced Anfield, a defender has meant the most to the team’s victories when he scores. It is rather wild to think about, but it is the truth. That is not to say that players such as Steven Gerrard, Mohammed Salah, and Roberto Firmino haven’t been greats for the club. It is only to point out that it is pretty rare for a defender to be in such a position to score so often.

VVD’s ability to contribute on corner kicks for Liverpool sets him apart.

While a top-flight defender, Virgil van Dijk’s height and head enable him to consistently make a difference for the Reds. In addition, Jürgen Klopp’s ability to design set pieces where he is the main target is a testament to the caliber of football player that he is.

For Klopp’s side, what Virgil brings to the table truly makes him a world-class football player that will make him one of the all-time greats for the club.

Next. The Premier League title is still within reach for Liverpool. dark
