Virgil van Dijk  – 2018 (Southampton)

The best January transfer ever made by anyone, and arguably one of the best transfers in the history of the club, superstar center-back Virgil van Dijk arrived at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp from Southampton for a cool £75 million, making him the second most expensive defender in history behind Harry Maguire at Manchester United.

Fast forward to 2022, Van Dijk has now been a vital component in the club winning the Champions League in 2018-19, taking home its first Premier League title in thirty years in 2019-20, and in their continuing pursuit of more silverware. Even as the least attacking defender on the squad, he has 15 goals and seven assists across all competitions for the Reds at the time of writing.

Frankly, it’s hard to imagine the Reds without the Dutchman now, and it’s extremely noticeable when he isn’t there. In October 2020, Van Dijk was ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury, and the rest of Liverpool’s campaign was an absolute slog. The Reds finished the season with nine league losses, compared to a combined 11 losses from the previous two and a half years with Van Dijk.

At the time of writing, Van Dijk has played 56 Premier League games at Anfield for Liverpool – and has not lost a single one. The towering defenseman has been with the Reds for just 3 years, and has already earned every single penny, and then some, with this club.

Marko Grujic – 2016 (Red Star Belgrade)

Grujic was Klopp’s first transfer chronologically, but we just couldn’t give him top billing on the slide over VVD. The midfielder moved from Red Star Belgrade for £5.1 million and only made 16 appearances for the club scoring just one goal. Other than that, though, Grujic served as loan money making machine, going to teams such as Cardiff City, Hertha Berlin, and Porto before finally being sold in 2021 to Porto for £10.5 million.

Tony Gallacher – 2018 (Falkirk)

Liverpool signed Gallacher, an 18-year-old Scottish defender, from Falkirk. Over his four years at the Reds, he typically represented the U23s, only seeing first-team action in a single match of the 2019-20 Carabao Cup. He made a permanent move to St. Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership in January 2022.
