Liverpool have the chance to temporarily go to the top of the Premier League table when they visit Newcastle for the opening game of the weekend. Newcastle v Liverpool is set to take place at St. James’ Park on Saturday at lunch time.

This particular Premier League fixture of Newcastle v Liverpool has not been entirely fun for the Magpies. Newcastle go into this game winless in their last 10 Premier League meetings against Liverpool. Newcastle have drawn four and lost six.

In addition to Newcastle not winning in the last 10 games against Liverpool, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last four Premier League away games against Newcastle, winning two and drawing two.

Liverpool players will have a ‘Jurgen Klopp contract extension bounce’ to their step. However, that being said, we can expect Klopp to make a few changes to the starting XI to maintain freshness and ensure that they can avoid injuries.

Liverpool are clearly in great form. They go into this game with 12 Premier League wins out of 13 on the trot which includes a 2-2 draw against Manchester City.

Sadio Mane is the main man in form. He has scored four goals in his last six appearances for Liverpool across all competitions. In addition to Mane’s goal-scoring form, Mohamed Salah has been on his assisting best. He has set up his teammates on 13 occasions in this season.

Liverpool will only miss out on Roberto Firmino given his injury. However, he should be back sooner rather than later. His absence can end up being pivotal for Liverpool given that he will be back at the time that Klopp might want to make a few changes to the starting line up in these last few weeks of the season.

The home manager, Eddie Howe has a selection headache. Newcastle currently has a bunch of injuries. Ryan Fraser, Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, Isaac Hayden and Jamaal Lewis are all out injured.
