Jurgen Klopp needs to support Darwin Nunez when isolated

Darwin Nunez was Liverpool’s main purchase in the summer. He was the only real purchase, in hindsight; the rest of them either haven’t really been that significant, or have been sidelined. But well, they have to make do with what they have now, even though they probably need more players.

Be that as it may, they need to utilise Nuñez well enough when things are not working out for him. He’s more of a traditional striker than a false nine, and when he’s isolated – something that happens very often – Klopp needs to help him out. Either put him on the left wing and let Gakpo be the striker, or, if that’s something that Klopp doesn’t want to do, he can change the formation.

Why he doesn’t change the formation more often needs more explaining than this, which I will get to, but regardless, putting a creative midfielder or forward just behind Nuñez would do wonders for him.

That way, the CAM can attract bodies and leave some space for Nunez to pounce on, or, just play balls to Nuñez because even if the CAM – possibly Roberto Firmino or Diogo Jota when fit – doesn’t do a whole lot, his mere presence alone would help Nunez whenever he’s not getting the ball fed to him. A 4-2-3-1 would be really helpful to get Nuñez out of his rust at times. But if the CAM is as good as Jota, you know there are so many ways Liverpool can succeed with these players in the lineup.
