Liverpool haven’t really had the best of seasons so far, but honestly, I wouldn’t call this whole year a failure. No way. They won the FA Cup, they were in the final of the Champions League and the EFL Cup, and they only lost the Premier League by a single point. All of that happened in 2022. Yes, the rest of the year wasn’t all that great, but we can’t ignore all the team achieved.

FIFPro World XI will be announced at the end of the month, and FIFA have released the nominees for the award.

There are two Liverpool players who have made the cut.

Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson Becker are the only two Liverpool players to have received nominations

To be honest, I would’ve expected a couple more nominations. Maybe Mohamed Salah deserved one, and maybe Trent deserved one, but these two players were excellent in their own right, so they deserve it fully.

I think only one out of these two will make it to the actual team, and that is Virgil Van Dijk, because the goalkeeper spot will probably be taken by the man who is responsible for Liverpool’s Champions League loss, Thibaut Courtois.

But, in the centre-back positions, I don’t think many options are more suited for the spot than Van Dijk. He had a great season, and he fully deserves the spot he will undoubtedly get.

As for the players who could’ve received a nomination, I think Trent’s defensive vulnerabilities are blown out of proportion. Yes, he’s not a great defender, but he’s not the worst either, and the stuff he does on the offensive end should be accounted for. Maybe it wasn’t Trent’s best season, but he still deserved a nomination.

Salah probably deserved the nomination far more than Trent, he carried the offensive load for so long, and he was excellent apart from a couple of games.

Former Red Sadio Mane isn’t on the list either, although he made the top 2 for the Ballon d’Or. Make it make sense, guys.
