According to reports generated by Athletic journalist David Ornstein, it seems Liverpool target Mason Mount is leaning towards a move rivals Manchester Utd over a potential deal at Anfield.
The report has been met with mixed feelings by Liverpool fans, many of whom will state that they didn’t want Mount at the club anyway. While others are using it as another mark against the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, despite also agreeing the Chelsea midfielder is not good enough to pull on a red shirt anyway.
Firstly Mason Mount is a quality footballer. There is a reason that Chelsea would like to keep him at Stamford Bridge and the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Eric Ten Hag and Thomas Tuchel are all being liked to his services. There is a reason that every coach he has worked with sang his praises and continued to select him in their teams. In fact, the only people that don’t seem to rate Mason Mount are the fans and in particular the modern day ones that get all of their ball knowledge from watching players on TikTok. Flashy skills and electric pace do not automatically make you a world class player. Instead it takes brains, dedication and self sacrifice and these are attributes that Mount seems to have and Liverpool fans should be begging for him to head to Anfield.
Secondly there is no point in getting up tight about rumours and hearsay in the media. As respectable as Ornstein is, he is not right about these things all the time. And he even says that Mount is, “leaning towards joining Manchester Utd should Chelsea decide to sell,” which basically means his future is up in the air and Utd have a very real chance of signing him. It was only a day earlier that many outlets said that Liverpool was Mount’s most likely destination.
The truth of the matter is, no one has clue what is going on behind closed doors. A player of Mount’s quality will have a lot of options on the table and a lot to consider before taking the next step of his career. And if he does choose Manchester Utd over Liverpool it will have nothing to do with FSG or Jordan Henderson or losing money from not being in the Champions League. Instead it will be because Mason Mount thinks that playing in Manchester is right for him at this point in time. Although it is often hard for fans to think this way, not everyone wants to play for Liverpool and we sometime have to accept that is the case. However, I am going call David Ornstein’s bluff on this one by saying, should Mason Mount leave Chelsea then there is only one destination for him, and that is Anfield.
