With Liverpool’s impending clash with Newcastle United on Sunday, I decided to gather up some fun facts about the series between the two and brought up some memorable matches from the past. Here we go!

SERIES STATS:

  • Liverpool have won 33 of the 56 Premier League matches with Newcastle United.
  • Michael Owen scored the last Liverpool hat-trick against Newcastle way back in 2001. (Let’s hope someone can change that tomorrow.)
  • Liverpool’s 113 goals against the Magpies are the most they’ve scored against any team in the Premier League era.

Memorable Matches

Liverpool 6 – Newcastle 0 April 2013: This match was what the peak Brendan Rodgers teams looked like. A swashbuckling attack that simply outclassed and overwhelmed opponents.

A young Jordan Henderson bagged a brace as did the mercurial Daniel Sturridge as the Reds ran riot at St. James Park.

Liverpool 5 – Newcastle 1 December 2008: Five years before the above match, Rafa Benitez was still prowling the Liverpool touchline and his men recorded a dominant victory against Newcastle. Steven Gerrard scored twice as he inspired his side in typical fashion.

Even Lucas Leiva and Ryan Babel were getting in on the attack for Liverpool as this was one of the signature wins of the campaign that would ultimately fall just short as they usually did during this era.

Liverpool 4 – Newcastle 3 – April 1996: This is considered one of the greatest matches of all-time. Both the Reds and Magpies were still in with a shout of winning the League coming into this match.

Liverpool had to fight back from multiple deficits in this one as Robbie Fowler was on the score sheet twice. However, it was Stan Collymore who was the hero as he also scored two including the game winner in the 92nd minute.

If the match on Sunday comes anywhere close to this, we all might need to to have a a breathing machine handy to make sure we can handle the inevitable emotional roller coaster.

The hope is that Liverpool can chalk up another smashing victory for the record books, but any win will do. If the past is anything to go by, this match should be quite entertaining and full of all kinds of intrigue.

Let’s hope that come Monday morning we are celebrating yet another memorable win up North.
