The first 45 minutes for Liverpool at the Molineux Stadium could not have gone any worse. It was a dismal return to Premier League action as the 1-0 halftime deficit flattered the Reds. Things needed to change and they did. The second half was another marker in the growing list of Liverpool comebacks.

During the the peak of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign at Manchester United they were synonymous with scoring late, late goals to complete comebacks.

It almost became something that we expected to see. That winning mentality is something that comes from the top down and it permeates throughout the club.

Jurgen Klopp has built something similar in his tenure at Anfield with no greater example of this than the Champions League miracle from 3-0 to take down Barcelona. However, last year it looked like every crucial goal was being scored against Liverpool

They were finding ways to throw away points and it was very unusual to see from a side that was known as the “Mentality Monsters” for a time due to their relentless endeavors.

If a team truly wants to contend for the Top 4 and for titles, they need to have the confidence when it comes to the latter stages. The 2023-24 version of Liverpool appear to be back to their clutch best in the early going.

An early deficit and down a man against Bournemouth proved to be no problem. Down a goal and down a man away to Newcastle proved to be no problem.

Then, down a goal playing their worst football of the season away to Wolves and they turned it around behind an Andy Robertson 85th minute winner.

That’s 3 of the 5 matches already that have required the Reds to dig deep and show their mettle. To their credit, they have done just that. However, the boss would probably not want to use up all the fighting spirit this early in the season.

We cannot look past the sluggish starts that have tasked the Reds with comebacks at various stages. Ideally, these are matches that the team will want to be cruising through, especially with European football soon to fire up.

One thing that is nice to see about these comebacks is it is different players stepping up whether it’s Robbo, Darwin Nunez or Mo Salah among others.

It should be a good feeling for Klopp to know he has a squad full of match winners.

Ultimately, as long as Liverpool gets the right result, it’ll be hard to fault them. However, the method they have chosen to secure 13 points from 15 in the early season will have many Reds fans and probably the gaffer checking their blood pressure on a minute-to-minute basis.

Take it easy on us lads and bag a few first half goals eh?
