Liverpool will square off with Bournemouth in the 4th round of the Carabao Cup as both sides continue their quest for a domestic trophy. The Reds have played the Cherries a few times in cup action, but it does not happen often.

For this exercise we are not going to examine the two FA Cup matches from the 1920’s and 1960’s. Question me if you will, but I don’t think those carry much weight for Thursday’s meeting.

January 2014 FA Cup 4th Round (Liverpool 2-0 Bournemouth) – In just an incredible sign of how far Liverpool have come in less than a decade, their starting keeper in this match was Brad Jones.

The attacking partnership was Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. The latter of whom scored on the hour in this match.

Victor Moses was also on the score sheet for the Reds before he was replaced by a young Raheem Sterling. Phil Coutinho was also in this Starting XI as the then boss Brendan Rodgers fielded a relatively strong side for this clash.

December 2014 League Cup 5th Round (Liverpool 3-1 Bournemouth) – This domestic cup meeting was headlined by a Sterling brace as he struck on either side of the half.

The Reds got their third goal from Lazar Markovic in one of the very few bright spots that he had during his ill-fated stay at Anfield.

Steven Gerrard was at the heart of the midfield as was accustomed. He was joined by his future replacement as Captain Jordan Henderson. Lucas Leiva and Kolo Toure were cleaning things up in front of the defense.

The Cherries got their consolation goal through the journeyman Dan Gosling.

October 2015 League Cup 4th Round (Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth) – This was the last time these two sides met in domestic cup action until this week’s matchup.

Jurgen Klopp, still freshly hired at this point, featured a very unique starting XI that contained the likes of Connor Randall, Cameron Brannagan, Jordan Ibe and Joao Teixeira.

Liverpool scraped out of their with a win behind a 17th minute effort from Nathaniel Clyne. Future Newcastle boss Eddie Howe had little he could turn to off the bench in this one as he brought on Lee Tomlin for help.

I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to expect Klopp to include some new youngsters in the 2023 edition of domestic cup action with Bournemouth.

The Reds have never lost to Bournemouth in the FA Cup or the League Cup so hopefully that trend continues on the first day of November.
