It is seemingly all change in terms of Liverpool wingers on Saturday. In the morning, it was widely reported that Bradley Barcola's move to Merseyside is a done deal, joining from Paris Saint-Germain for £123 million, expected to put pen to paper and signing a five year contract at AXA Training Centre on Sunday.
Then, Andoni Iraola's side were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest at Anfield, twice equalising through Alexander Isak and then Víctor Muñoz. That though already feels like it happened in the distant past, considering all the news that has broken subsequently.
Cody Gakpo started that game, assisting Isak's equaliser, but that was seemingly a parting gift. It has been widely reported on Saturday night that the Dutchman wants to leave the club and will be allowed to do so before Tuesday's deadline. Both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City are chasing his signature, with Gakpo choosing the latter, poised to move to the Etihad for around £85 million.
This led to fans wondering who would be signed to replace the 27 year old. Well, they were not left in the dark for long. That's because, according to Khadim Diakhaté of Dsports in Senegal, Liverpool have stepped up their interest in Crystal Palace winger Ismaïla Sarr. He notes that fellow Senegalese international Iliman Ndiaye of Everton is also an option, which would certainly be interesting.
Diakhaté adds that the 28 year old is their top target, and "are already preparing" an offer of around £69 million, having seen an opening bid of £43 million rejected. The Eagles have also turned down two bids from Turkish Süper Lig side Galatasaray for Sarr, who reportedly favours to move to Anfield over the Ali Sami Yen.
Sarr scored 21 goals across all competitions last season, including nine in the UEFA Conference League as Crystal Palace won the trophy in Leipzig. The Senegalese forward also has seven career goals against Liverpool to his name, of which five came in 2025. He has only bagged more goals (8) against Aston Villa, potentially seeking to add to that when the Reds visit Villa Park in December.
He is yet to feature for Pierre Sage's side this season, underlining that he is likely to leave Selhurst. So, would selling Gakpo and signing Sarr, who is a year older, be smart business? Well, it is hard to tell.
Gakpo has, pretty inarguably, been the Reds' most-dangerous attacker against Newcastle and Forest, so letting him join a direct rivals is pretty baffling. Sarr meantime is a pretty underwhelming Mohamed Salah replacement, even if he will probably suit Iraola's system and, in the short term, he will make this generally toothless attack better.
