There is a distinct, agonising sensation every Liverpool supporter knows all too well: watching your team cling onto a one-goal lead in stoppage time while a relentless home side throws everything at your penalty box.
Even at 2-1 up against a Brentford side reduced to nine men following second-half red cards for Yehor Yarmolyuk and Vitaly Janelt, those closing minutes at the Gtech Community Stadium felt far more tense than they ever had a right to be.
As Bradley Barcola squandered golden opportunities to put the match beyond reach, traveling Kopites and at home were left biting their nails right up until the final whistle.
Yet, when the dust settled, Liverpool walked away with all three points in a dramatic away comeback victory and it was the £125 man Alexander Isak who once again proved why the Reds invested so heavily in his services.
Making a surprise return to the starting lineup after missing Liverpool’s last two fixtures with a lingering thigh problem, the Swedish international had spent most of the afternoon starving for service.
But elite No. 9s only need one opening. Eight minutes after Victor Muñoz hauled Andoni Iraola’s side level, Isak produced a sublime touch and razor-sharp finish in the 70th minute to secure a vital win.
How Isak decided the contest
Speaking post-match, Isak reflected on the grit required to overcome a physical Brentford side that took a 1-0 lead into half-time through Keane Lewis-Potter’s header:
"Super-happy with the win. It's a tough ground, it's a tough team to play, especially away from home. We knew it was going to be a fight, a bit of a scrappy game, and it's important to come out on top in these games."
"I think there's still lots to improve but we're taking steps and we're obviously grabbing points on the way, which is important. It's a tough place to come to, so three points is really good."
Dissecting the clinical instincts behind his game-winning strike, the 27-year-old striker explained how patience is key when playing against compact defenses:
"It was more about concentration because I didn't have too many chances. I was kind of waiting for my moment and that was the one. So, I just tried to get control of the ball and finish as quickly as possible. Luckily, it went in."
"I think that's the way it is, especially in these games. When they go a man down, obviously they protect their goal a bit more, so there's not much space to play in. You've got to be ready for when the chance pops up."
Isak’s Message on game management
Having delivered his decisive blow, Isak was substituted in the 79th minute. What followed was a nervy conclusion where Liverpool struggled to manage the tempo, leaving themselves exposed to late counter-attacks despite numerical superiority.
Watching from the sidelines, Isak admitted he found himself shouting at his teammates to prioritise game control over chasing a third goal:
"Us from the bench were screaming for the team to keep the ball and just play out the game. It's different from the side. Myself, if I saw a great opportunity I probably would have wanted to score. Maybe in those situations we just have to be a bit more safe."
His candid assessment echoed the post-match commentary of former Reds midfielder Steve McManaman, who was critical of Liverpool’s inability to kill off the contest smoothly. Isak readily conceded that while the result is massive, there is plenty for Iraola’s squad to iron out ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League encounter against Villarreal:
"I think there’s still lots to improve. We’re taking steps and we’re grabbing points on the way which is important. It’s a tough place to come so three points is really good."
After suffering a thigh strain that ruled him out of recent matches, his immediate return to goalscoring form highlights how vital he is to Iraola's tactical engine:
- 2025–26 Season Tally: Isak has now registered 4 Premier League goals in 7 appearances this season, maintaining an impressive conversion rate despite intermittent fitness breaks.
- Injury Record: His latest thigh setback follows a minor muscular issue earlier in the campaign, making his workload management crucial as Liverpool balance domestic duties with European commitments.
- Clinical Presence: Across all competitions since joining, Isak averages a goal involvement every 118 minutes, providing the elite finishing touch Liverpool often missed in tight away fixtures.
Winning ugly away from home is the hallmark of any serious football team. While there is work to do on control and game management, having an world-class finisher like Alexander Isak fit and firing gives Liverpool the exact edge they need during a demanding autumn schedule.
