Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has broken his silence on his contract standoff at Liverpool, admitting that he was left feeling "very, very sad" after being informed that the club are not currently in a position to offer him a new deal.
The Argentine World Cup winner, who arrived from Brighton in the summer of 2023, has two years remaining on his current terms.While key midfield colleagues Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch have both been rewarded with lucrative long-term contract extensions, Mac Allister's situation remains unresolved.
Naturally, his recent candid remarks sent shockwaves through the fanbase just as Andoni Iraola side prepared for their blockbuster Champions League showdown against Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
Mac Allister's father has also addressed the situation, denying any contact from the rumoured-to-be-interested Real Madrid, and suggesting it is Liverpool's right to decide when, or if, to renew his son's contract.
However, the Liverpool midfielder has now spoken at greater length about the comments and insisted they were driven by emotion rather than criticism of the club.
Mac Allister explains his Liverpool contract comments
In an interview with ESPN Argentina, the World Cup finalist explained that his previous comments came after being asked directly about his future and were not intended to put pressure on Liverpool.
“I still have two years left. In that press conference, since they were asking me about my future, it came from within me, mostly the emotions.”
The Argentine also made clear that he accepts Liverpool's decision-making process and was not attempting to question the club.
“It wasn't about judging the club or anything like that, because at the end of the day they're the ones who run it and make the decisions, and that's perfectly fine with me.”
Mac Allister's current Liverpool contract still has two years remaining, leaving plenty of time for the situation to develop. The midfielder also acknowledged that his future is not necessarily straightforward, with plenty capable of changing during that period.
“But like I said, I'm going to give my best. I have two years left, and a lot of things could happen in those two years, there are a lot of options.”
Is Mac Allister leaving Liverpool?
While the 27-year-old did not rule out the possibility of his situation changing in the future, he was clear that he is currently enjoying life at Anfield.
“So, from my side, I really enjoy being where I am. I hope it's for more years, but if it's two, that's perfect, and I'll enjoy it, enjoy it with my family.”
That represents a notably calmer message than the one which initially sparked speculation around his contract.
Liverpool’s Argentine is not suggesting that a new deal is imminent, but equally he is not expressing a desire to leave Liverpool. Instead, the midfielder appears content to focus on his football while he still has two years left on his existing agreement.
He finished by making his feelings towards Liverpool clear:
“Because I have no doubt Liverpool are one of the best clubs in the world.”
The comments provide some clarity after weeks of speculation over his Liverpool contract.
Mac Allister has been in great form for the Reds so far this season, remains under contract at Anfield for another two years, and has made clear that he is happy at the club, while leaving the door open to whatever happens beyond his current deal.
