Liverpool fans watching the World Cup would have been impressed by Gilberto Mora of Mexico. Reds midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who is at the tournament with Argentina, has now expressed how impressed he is with the young player.
When asked by Claro Sports about Mora being linked with Liverpool, Mac Allister replied:
"Honestly, I didn’t see anything about it. When these things happen, you’re always careful what you say, out of respect for the player and the club he belongs to. But if they’re mentioning him as a possible Liverpool player, he’s surely a great player. There’s a reason they’re mentioning him."
Mora is just 17, but played in four out of five of Mexico's games at the World Cup. This included their 3-2 defeat to England in the quarter-finals. Argentina will play the Three Lions next, so it is no surprise that he would have been watching that match.
In total, Mora now has 12 caps for Mexico. He set up Raul Jiminez's winning-goal in the semi-finals of the Gold Cup last year. That match with Honduras was just Mora's second game for his country. El Tri went on to defeat the USMNT in the final of the tournament.
The young Mexican came through the ranks at Tijuana. He has already played 53 times for the Liga MX side, scoring 10 goals with two assists. He was also a Liga MX All-Star last season.
Gilberto Mora must choose his next destination wisely
As well as Liverpool, both Manchester City and Manchester United are reportedly interested in his services. As Mora is predominantly an attacking midfielder, he may find game time limited at City, as they have Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden. The same goes for United, who have the club captain Bruno Fernandes operating in the position.
Mora can also play on the left wing and as a second striker. Liverpool could do with a new attacking midfielder to provide competition for Florian Wirtz. The German did not live up to expectations in his first season at Liverpool. The same goes for Alexander Isak, and with Hugo Ekitike injured, Mora could play up front for the Reds.
Liverpool do have an abundance of left wingers now. Cody Gakpo is still at the club, but many fans do not rate him anymore. Rio Ngumoah is a bright young talent, whilst the Reds have also recently signed Victor Munoz from Osasuna.
Mora needs to join a club where he will get regular game time to continue his development. It may be too early for him to jump straight to a Premier League club. FC Como of Serie A have also been linked with Mora recently. Playing under Cesc Fabregas in Italy could be a good stepping stone for the Mexican.
