Could a familiar face from Kirkby hold the secret key to solving two major transfer headaches at Anfield in one single move?

When Liverpool sanction an academy departure, the natural impulse among Kopites is to wonder whether we’ll live to regret it.

Yet as Michael Edwards and former sporting director Richard Hughes have demonstrated time and again, the modern recruitment strategy is far more calculated than a simple goodbye.

Behind the scenes, insurance policies are built into almost every high-profile exit and one of those safety nets is suddenly glowing bright.

With significant defensive changes brewing on the horizon ahead of the January window, reports confirm that Liverpool are continuing to keep close tabs on an England international defender capable of seamlessly filling two distinct positions in Andoni Iraola backline.

That man is Jarell Quansah.

The defensive puzzle facing Andoni Iraola

To understand why Quansah’s name has re-emerged in the corridors of the AXA Training Centre, you only have to look at the contract and squad situation currently facing Liverpool.

As things stand, Iraola's defensive setup remains in transition.

Ronald Araujo is currently on loan from Barcelona, providing invaluable cover at right-back with considerable success. Liverpool hold a £47m option to make that deal permanent at the end of the campaign.

Simultaneously, the lingering uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s future looms large, with speculation increasing that the legendary club captain could seek a fresh challenge as a free agent when his contract expires.

Should Van Dijk move on and Araujo's situation remain unresolved, Iraola would suddenly find himself needing elite, highly adaptable reinforcements at both centre-back and right-back simultaneously.

Enter Quansah. Since swapping Merseyside for Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, the 23-year-old has developed at an astonishing rate. Crucially, his versatility across their defensive line featuring heavily at both right-back and central defence while earning senior England caps makes him a uniquely valuable profile for Iraola's high-pressing, intense system.

According to a report Liverpool are maintaining active scouting reports on their former academy graduate, weighing up their options as the summer approaches.

German journalist Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) recently reported that movement is already happening behind the scenes regarding Quansah’s long-term future at Leverkusen.

🚨🆕 Jarell Quansah could leave Bayer 04 Leverkusen in summer 2027. Movement already happening behind the scenes.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are interested. Real Madrid are regularly scouting him.

With European rivals like Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Chelsea hovering and Enzo Maresca's Manchester City constantly monitoring top English talent—Liverpool hold a distinct financial and structural advantage thanks to their pre-agreed clause, provided they decide to pull the trigger.

The prospect of activating Quansah's buy-back clause has already gained firm support from former Reds striker and Liverpool Echo columnist John Aldridge, who insists bringing the defender back to Anfield should be an absolute priority if Van Dijk departs.

Speaking on the Liverpool Echo regarding the defensive crossroads facing the club, Aldridge was characteristically direct about what Liverpool ought to do:

"You know what I’d do? I’d be looking to bring back Jarell Quansah. There’s a £56m [£59.5m] buyback option on him and, for me, it’s a no-brainer.

"Next season, if Virgil goes, you’re looking at it, and we could have Araujo, [Jeremy] Jacquet, [Giovanni] Leoni and Quansah. That’s four great options.

"He’s gone to Leverkusen and is doing really well. He’s playing well for England. For me, you need four really good centre-halves."

While Aldridge makes a compelling case, activating a buy-back clause is rarely a simple press-of-a-button exercise.

Liverpool retain a £59.5m (€70m) buy-back clause inserted into the original deal that took Quansah to Germany. However, that option comes with a strict expiration date: June 15, 2027. That timeline leaves Liverpool’s sporting hierarchy needing absolute clarity on Van Dijk's intentions early in the summer window to execute the move in time.

What it means for Iraola, Liverpool, and Quansah

From a fan's perspective, bringing Quansah home represents a fascinating narrative arc. We all remember his initial breakthrough under Jurgen Klopp before making the move abroad to establish himself on the elite European stage.

Watching him rebuild his confidence in the Bundesliga and become a regular for England has been immensely satisfying. But a return to Kirkby under Iraola carries real tactical questions:

  • Is £59.5m the best use of the summer budget? While a steep investment, securing a home-grown 23-year-old capable of solving two tactical positions in Iraola's system could prove far cheaper than buying two separate £40m players.
  • Does Quansah fit Iraola's long-term plan? Iraola demands physical intensity, athletic recovery speed, and composure on the ball traits Quansah has developed in abundance in Germany.
  • Does Quansah want to return? Regular first-team football was the driving force behind his move to Leverkusen. If he returns to Anfield, he will expect guaranteed minutes rather than a rotational bench role.

For now, Liverpool face a decision, not a guarantee. But as June approaches and the defensive picture at Anfield comes into sharper focus, don't be surprised if the kid from Kirkby makes a triumphant return to where it all began.
