When Jeremie Frimpong completed his £30m move to Liverpool, he was widely regarded as the solution to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold’s attacking output on the right flank.
Fast forward to the present day, however, and the Dutchman’s situation at Anfield has rapidly turned into one of the most concerning subplots of the new campaign leaving many to wonder whether his time on Merseyside is already ticking down.
The international break was supposed to provide a fresh platform for the 25-year-old to rebuild his confidence. Having been left out of the World Cup setup by former dutch coach Ronald Koeman, Frimpong was recalled to the Netherlands squad under Xavi. Yet, across a grueling four-game Nations League schedule that concluded with Sunday's 2–1 victory over Serbia, Frimpong failed to play a single minute.
He spent three of those fixtures as an unused substitute and was omitted from the matchday squad altogether for the first of two encounters with Serbia on September 27. Strikingly, only centre-back Nathan Ake and goalkeepers Robin Roefs and Mark Flekken joined Frimpong in failing to see the pitch for Xavi and unlike Frimpong, all three at least made every single matchday squad.
It paints a bleak picture for a player currently struggling for minutes for both club and country. At Liverpool, new head coach Andoni Iraola who stepped into the Anfield hotseat following Arne Slot's departure started Frimpong in the opening two Premier League fixtures of the season.
However, opposing sides quickly identified the Dutchman as a defensive target during back-to-back 2–2 draws against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.
In response, Iraola turned to loan signing Ronald Araujo to shore up the right side of defense. The physical defender has since excelled across consecutive outings in the Premier League and Champions League, anchoring a backline alongside Milos Kerkez, Jérémy Jacquet, and Virgil van Dijk.
While the Reds remain unbeaten in all competitions, the 25-year-old Netherlands international has been relegated to the periphery.
In total, the Dutch right-back has managed just 209 minutes of league action across seven matches this term, starting only twice. The last start came in a 3–1 Carabao Cup win against Spurs, and with Araujo firmly established, the 25-year-old is not expected to regain top-choice status for Sunday’s crucial showdown against Manchester City
The immediate future looks equally challenging. While Joe Gomez provides further depth, the long-term plan at right-back centers on Conor Bradley once fully recovered from injury. With Iraola preferring a physical defensive profile and Bradley viewed as the long-term solution, the 25-year-old's pathway back into the starting lineup looks increasingly blocked.
Reports indicate the Dutch right-back is open to pulling the plug on this stint after struggling to adapt to English football, with Barcelona closely monitoring the situation ahead of 2027.
According to Juan Jesus, Barcelona are considering Frimpong as part of their right-back shortlist. The report claims the player is struggling badly with life and football in England,

For Liverpool fans, there is an unmistakable sense of disappointment if a move to Spain allows the club to recoup the £30m investment, cutting losses on an experiment that simply hasn't clicked may prove the best outcome for all parties.
