It appears 25-year-old center back Marc Guehi, whose summer transfer to Liverpool fell through at the last second, will sign for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City.

This one will sting. The £20 million speculated is considerably less than the £35 million Liverpool was willing to pay.

Plus the England international is Premier League proven and homegrown, two bonus qualities that many of our first team options lack.

Given Jarrell Quansah's summer move to Bayer Leverkusen, Giovanni Leoni's season-ending ACL injury, Joe Gomez's spotty fitness record, and the up-and-down form of Ibrahima Konate — whose Liverpool contract expires after this season — Liverpool really could have used Guehi at center back.

He doesn't always state it plainly, but Arne Slot has concerns about availability. This would have helped alleviate at least some of them.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans have grown testier inside and outside of Anfield as this season of letdowns has continued to snowball. They're desperate for a big result or a big signing. This is the opposite.
