Liverpool have reportedly struck a loan agreement with FC Barcelona for centre-back Ronald Araujo, with the move breaking just two weeks before the opener of the 2026/27 Premier League at St. James Park.
Araujo is set to undergo a medical before completing a temporary move to Anfield, as Liverpool address a shortage of bodies in defence.
The report comes as Liverpool face a stretched defensive department, with Joe Gomez, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni all working their way back into training after periods out of action with injury.

Why are Barcelona willing to let Araujo go?
At 27 years old and standing 6’3”, the Uruguayan centre-half remains one of Europe’s most physically imposing defenders but has slipped down the pecking order at Barcelona.
Last season he lost his starting spot to Gerard Martin, who partnered Pau Cubarsi at the heart of the Blaugrana defence. His decline arguably began a season earlier, when another Spanish central defender in Inigo Martinez was preferred alongside Cubarsi before his move to Saudi Arabia.
The Uruguayan can also operate at right-back, but French international Jules Kounde is first choice there and remains amongst the world’s elite in that position, with versatile squad option Eric Garcia deputising when the Frenchman is unavailable.
With few clear pathways into Hansi Flick’s senior XI, a departure has looked increasingly likely.
The 27-year-old has previously attracted major interest including a reported approach from Bayern Munich worth around 80 million euros in late 2023. Barcelona declined that offer, but the defensive landscape at the club has shifted significantly since then.
Who is Ronald Araujo?
Araujo progressed through La Masia after arriving from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018, making his first-team debut in 2019.
He leaves the club as one of its four captains, having made 213 appearances and scored 14 goals across all competitions. He was part of Barcelona sides that won three La Liga titles, underlining his pedigree at the highest level.
In his time at Barcelona, he was lauded as one of the best defenders in Spanish football, specifically under the management of legendary Spanish midfielder Xavi in 2021/22 and 2022/23.
The Uruguayan is a modern centre-back, aggressive in his tackling and bears great acceleration to couple that defensive composure.
He has the sort of recovery pace which allows possession-based teams such as Barcelona to play with a high line when maintaining an in-possession shape and pushing the centre-halves up to sit on the half-way line.
That sort of physical profile could prove invaluable under the tactical system of Andoni Iraola, which similarly asks for the defence to sit high on the ball and requires elite acceleration from central defenders to cover for losses of possession in transition and behind full-backs who overlap into attacking areas.
Immediate impact at Anfield
Following the departure of Ibrahima Konate for Real Madrid on a free transfer, Araujo is expected to gain regular minutes on an immediate basis under Liverpool’s new Spaniard manager.
After the losses of Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah, two of Liverpool’s most senior figures in the dressing room, the Barcelona captain’s arrival provides a level head and seniority in a defensive line going through a transition period in terms of leadership.
The Uruguayan will be pivotal in the early stages of the season and should calm the storm until the returns of Jacquet, Leoni and Gomez steady the ship.
Should he settle quickly, reports from Mundo Deportivo suggest Liverpool have negotiated an option to buy him permanently at the end of the loan spell.
Injury concerns remain a question mark
Despite his undoubted quality, Araujo's fitness record is a legitimate concern. He has managed only around 1,500 minutes across his last two seasons and was ruled out of the 2026 World Cup entirely after picking up a training injury before the tournament, never featuring for Uruguay.
At his best, Araujo has been regarded as one of the finest central defenders in world football. For Liverpool, the hope will be that a fresh start delivers the consistency and fitness that eluded him in his final seasons at Barcelona.
With the start of the season just two weeks away, and reports just a week ago that Liverpool were not looking to sign defensive reinforcements this summer, Liverpool supporters will be relieved to loan in a Uruguayan who has the potential to return to Europe’s elite.
