In completely out of the blue transfer news, Liverpool have reportedly agreed to sign 22-year old Spanish winger Victor Muñoz.

Late Wednesday or early Thursday, depending where you are, saw Fabrizio Romano report that the Reds had completely pulled a surprise move off for the Spaniard and gotten a deal across the line.

While we had all been following the close pursuit of Ivorian Yan Diomande, there was little notice of this deal even being on the cards, so it was a real slick piece of work done by the staff.

Victor Muñoz to Liverpool gets 'HERE WE GO!'

Per Romano, Newcastle United were said to be in advanced talks for several days to acquire Muñoz, but it was Liverpool that burst through the door at the eleventh hour to activate his €40 million release clause and get personal terms completed quickly.

Muñoz had a fine season at Osasuna in La Liga in 2025/26 as he produced six goals and two assists in league action across 34 appearances.

This is the second consecutive summer that Liverpool have snatched a forward from Newcastle's grasp at the last second. Hugo Ekitiké was a firm target for the Magpies before the Reds swooped in and got the deal over the line.

Romano also reported the contract for Muñoz will run through 2032, so it is an extremely long-term deal, which is something that the Reds do not typically hand out to players.

Liverpool make surprise move

The young Spaniard was close to making the move to St. James Park, but the final minute entry of Liverpool was enough to get things over the line.

It is an astute piece of business, as he has much room to grow and the transfer fee is not astronomical where it would put insane pressure on the youngster. The contract wage terms were not disclosed as of yet, but one would imagine they are more than manageable as he is still an ascending player coming from a mid-tier club in Spain.

€20 million of the fee will go to Real Madrid who had an previous sell-on clause with Muñoz when he joined Osasuna.

Romano also reports that the medical is already done and completed for the Spain international, who is a member of their current World Cup squad.

It will be interesting to see how this changes the pursuit of Diomande, if at all. If anything, this all but confirms the departure of Federico Chiesa this summer, barring an unforeseen circumstance.

Liverpool sign Victor Muñoz for €40 million in a surprise move, and will look to keep strengthening the rest of the summer window. Stay with Rush the Kop for future updates.
