Liverpool might be on the verge of completing a defensive evolution in one final swoop this transfer window as reports indicate they are in talks for a pair of centre-backs.

The Reds brought in fresh blood at both fullback slots at the beginning of this transfer window in the shape of Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. These were astute signings but the heart of defense was sorely lacking.

The update from sources like Fabrizio Romano are giving credence to the idea that Arne Slot will soon have defensive reinforcements following some very public errors against Crystal Palace.

Marc Guehi a top target

Speaking of Palace, their captain Guehi, started and played well in their Community Shield triumph over Liverpool in what amounted to a final trial run for him in front of the Reds' brass.

Romano and David Ornstein are both reporting that the player has nearly agreed all personal terms and the talks between clubs are now advancing.

A fee around £30-£35 million for the England international is being discussed although Palace would love to get a little more out of any potential deal. However, Guehi entering the final year of his contract means the club does not have the negotiating legs to stand on that they would like.

This might result in Richard Hughes bringing in a proven top class international defender for roughly the same cost they sold the 21-year old Jarell Quansah for earlier this summer.

That would be proper business without a doubt.

Guehi would bring strong stability to the Liverpool defense and could protect against a possible exit next summer of Ibrahima Konate.

Italian prospect could be the future

If Marc Guehi is a transfer with this season in mind, Parma's 18-year old Giovanni Leoni would be a long-term investment from the Reds.

The tall defender is wanted by almost every top Italian club, showcasing just how special a player that he might become one day.

Romano is reporting there are not talks for a loan deal in this one, it's a straight purchase that would see Leoni play a role this season for the Liverpool first team.

For his part, Leoni has already agreed personal terms with the Premier League champions and transfer discussions are ongoing between the clubs at this time. Parma will want to maximize their return on one of the best young prospects in Italian football, but there does not seem to be a lot of hurdles to this one getting over the line sooner than later.

A price tag of just under £26m is being reported which should be a comfortable fee for all parties to agree on and get hte deal done.
