Four major selection clues spotted in Liverpool training before UEFA Champions League clash with Villarreal

As the media contingent gathered at the AXA Training Centre for Liverpool’s brief open training window, all eyes were naturally fixed on Andoni Iraola. Here are four fascinating points we caught a glimpse of before the Reds turned their full focus to European action.

Liverpool host Spanish side Villarreal tomorrow for MD3 of the Champions League, and in their training in preparation for tomorrow, a few things caught our eye.

The Reds come into the tie in good form, with four wins and one loss in their last five, while Villarreal have three wins, one loss and a draw.

El Submarino Amarillo are yet to win at Anfield, but beat Napoli 3-1 in their last Champions League game, so they won't be pushovers.

So here's what we noticed in the Reds' final prep before tomorrow's fixture.

4 - No Dominik Szoboszlai, No Jeremie Frimpong, No Victor Munoz

The Dutchman's absence was no surprise. He has been plagued with muscle injuries since joining the Reds and has struggled to assert himself like he did for Bayer Leverkusen.

Dominik Szoboszlai missing out on training is a bit of a surprise, but it makes sense not to risk the Hungarian again after he was probably rushed back against Brentford.

The Reds still have many games to play and Szoboszlai will need to feature in as many as possible. Trey Nyoni has impressed since making more starts and will have the quality to replace Liverpool's number 8.

Plus, with Ryan Gravenberch fresh from his suspension, it should give Alexis Mac Allister an opportunity for some rest, or not a full 90 minutes.

Nyoni should get another chance on Tuesday and mitigate the absence of Szoboszlai.

Victor Munoz being absent is a cause for concern. He has been, alongside Jeremy Jacquet, Liverpool's best signing and was key in the victory over Brentford.

3 - Jayden Danns doesn't feel the cold

Every player apart from Jayden Danns was in long trackies and a jacket. Not Danns though, he was in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt.

His presence may indicate that he is on the cusp of returning into the side, to provide some support to Alexander Isak and Lewis Koumas.

Since Federico Chiesa fitness is unreliable, Danns' return would be a massive help.

Prior to the injuries that have kept him out for some time, Danns looked like a real talent, and featured often for Klopp in the cups.

He would bring another dynamic into Liverpool's attack, so it will be interesting to see if he makes an appearance tomorrow evening.

2 - Gakpo's return?

The Dutch winger was having a great start to the season prior to an injury during the international break.

The arrival of Barcola seemed to inject more urgency and quality into the number 18's game, which benefitted both him and his teammates.

However, after a nasty ankle injury he has had to sit the last three games out. Thankfully, the Reds have been able to get by without him, but there is no doubt he would be deputising for Isak over Lewis Koumas.

1 - Milos Kerkez and Ronald Araujo may be rested

The pair have been stalwarts for Iraola and are really coming into form. Especially the Hungarian, who struggled under Arne Slot and in the early games of this season.

While they have been important across both competitions, they are more suited to the style of the Premier League. Or, at least, Kostas Tsimikas and potentially Joe Gomez will benefit from Champions League football.

The demands of Premier League football are much higher, and Kerkez and Araujo will need to be fresh for the league, especially since they have started the majority of games.

The fullbacks appeared to warm up with the younger players, which may mean nothing, but it would be smart to allow one, if not both, a chance to rest.

Gomez didn't enjoy the best of games against LASK, but Tsimikas did, and may enjoy another good game against Villarreal.

The Reds will need every member of the squad this season, and Iraola will need to manage their minutes carefully to avoid further injuries.

A victory here will leave the Reds in a very good spot for the rest of the league phase of the competition.
