How Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz signing could affect Dominik Szoboszlai

After the ‘Here We Go’ bombshell was dropped by journalist Fabrizio Romano last night, it now looks as though Florian Wirtz will be making his way to Liverpool.

The fee, believed to be around £126 million, could become the third largest transfer fee of all-time, behind Kylian Mbappe and Neymar’s moves to Paris Saint-Germain.

There has been significant debate though over where Wirtz could fit into Arne Slot’s Premier League-winning Liverpool squad.

There have been numerous options floated, including him playing in the forward line and in midfield.

With Dominik Szoboszlai having frequently been played as Liverpool’s most advanced midfielder last season, it could obviously affect his position in the team.

Option one: play Wirtz in midfield

I think the most likely scenario is that Wirtz is played in midfield, but plays a different role next season to the one that Szoboszlai did this season.

Wirtz is likely in a way, the Salah replacement and would be the future of Liverpool’s attack, with the ball flowing through him.

Szoboszlai provides some contributions in the final third, but does not offer the same level of creativity.

This could see Szoboszlai moved back into one of the two deeper lying midfield positions, most likely as a rotation option for Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister.

The Hungarian recorded 13 goal contributions in the Premier League last season, a decent return, but not perhaps the kick on that everybody wanted.

He played in a deep lying role in Liverpool’s dead rubber at Brighton late last season, while he scored in that game, Szoboszlai didn’t set the world alight in a disjointed team.

Additionally, Szoboszlai being in the 55th percentile for tackles and 29th percentile among his peers for interceptions could also cast some doubt on his ability to do the role.

Szoboszlai should have no problem getting minutes overall with his versatility allowing him to potentially cover right-back, the wing, and all the spots in midfield.

Option two: play Florian Wirtz as a false nine

Perhaps the least likely option, playing Wirtz as a false nine, could open up different options for Liverpool in their front three.

This would allow Szoboszlai to keep his place  in the team as Liverpool’s most advanced midfielder.

It would also enable Liverpool to not spend a huge sum on a centre forward if Darwin Nunez departs this summer.

There is an argument though that Liverpool would then need to purchase a left winger with more pace than Luis Diaz.

As for Szoboszlai, this might free him up from the pressure of being a bigger part of Liverpool’s goal and assist return.

He offers so much more on the field, particularly with pace and power in his running and I think could thrive in an altered role.

Playing Wirtz in the false nine position, could be favourable as it would change the way the nine works at Liverpool and provide greater diversity in attack.

A better version of having Diaz played at nine brings its own benefits, and I think it could make defences second-guess their approach to blunting the edge of Liverpool’s attack.
