Andoni Iraola and Liverpool fans will have to place their trust in Fenway Sports Group as the club enters a new era, with significant changes taking place behind the scenes.
Liverpool have already seen Michael Edwards depart Fenway Sports Group, while sporting director Richard Hughes is also reportedly heading to the riches of Saudi Arabia and is expected to leave once his notice period ends on 1 September.
It is a significant blow for Iraola. Hughes was the man who brought him to Bournemouth before leaving for Liverpool, and he later played a key role in appointing the Spaniard as Arne Slot's successor. Let's hope it's nothing personal.
However, Reds need not worry. According to The Athletic's James Pearce, the man who played a key role in bringing Iraola and his backroom staff to Liverpool is set to remain at Anfield. Assistant sporting director David Woodfine is increasingly expected to earn a promotion, putting him in charge of shaping Liverpool's squad and recruitment strategy for years to come.
He previously held several senior recruitment roles at Liverpool between 2014 and 2023, including scouting and recruitment coordinator, head of football projects and scouting operations, and director of loan management. That experience gives him an in-depth understanding of the club's recruitment model and what it takes to get a deal over the line.
Work to do for Woodfine
Liverpool's transfer window has been relatively quiet compared to last summer, with only Victor Muñoz and Jérémy Jacquet arriving to strengthen the first-team squad. Woodfine and Hughes will now be focused on using the remainder of the window to build a squad capable of competing in both the Premier League and the Champions League under Andoni Iraola.
The Reds are still expected to make at least two more signings. A right winger is a priority to help fill the huge void left by Mohamed Salah's departure, while another versatile defender capable of playing at both full-back and centre-back is also high on the wishlist. Iraola may also push for a more dynamic, high-energy midfielder to better suit his pressing style of play.
And that is just the immediate priority. The new sporting director will also be focused on building a team for the future, constructing a starting XI around the likes of Rio Ngumoha, Giovanni Leoni and the club's other emerging talents.
Whoever is on the Liverpool shortlist, Hughes and Woodfine will have to work in a competitive market to bring the right type of player that is going to fit into the fast-paced, action packed football demanded on Merseyside.
