Andreas Schjelderup put his name in lights on the world's biggest stage. His freak, flukey opening goal for Norway against England has sent his stock skyrocketing, with Liverpool now leading a queue of elite European clubs tracking the talented winger.
The highly anticipated World Cup quarter-final in the humid conditions of Miami ended in a dramatic1–2 victory for England after extra time.
Underdog Norway took a shock lead. Schjelderup, assisted by Oscar Bobb, whipped in a speculative cross-shot from the left wing. The ball completely deceived England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, clanging off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net.
It was one of the goals of the tournament. However, it is extremely unlikely that he did.
According to the Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, which has been brought to our attention via Sport Witness. They state that Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are also monitoring the player.
Nevertheless, you create your own luck, and Schjelderup also got three assists in the six games he played at the World Cup. This included setting up both of Erling Haaland's goals in their round of 16 win over Brazil. Schjelderup also assisted Thelo Aasgaard's goal against the tournament favorites, France who at the time of writing are in the semi final of the tournement vs Spain.
It is a newspaper from Portugal that is in the know about Schjelderup because he plays in the country for Benfica. He came through the ranks at Nordsjælland after spending time with Bodø/Glimt's academy.
Schjlelderup played 94 times for Nordsjælland, scoring 27 goals with 16 assists. This is across two spells at the club, as when Benfica signed him, they loaned him straight back to the Norwegian side.
Andreas Schjelderup needs to find a club where he can still get regular game time
With Benfica, Schjlelderup has found the back of the net 15 times with 15 assists in 86 matches. He has helped them win the Primeira Liga, Taça da Liga and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira twice.
The left-winger is only 22, but still looks even more youthful than that. There has been much speculation about his future throughout his career so far. He was even linked with Liverpool and Arsenal before he joined Benfica.
The 22-year-old has been wise with the transfer he made to Benfica to ensure he gets regular game time and continues his development. This should still be a factor in which club he potentially moves to next.
Chelsea could be a good option for Schjelderup as they are looking to sell Alejandro Garnacho. Mykhailo Mudryk is currently suspended for doping. They also have Jamie Gittens as a left-winger, but he did not live up to expectations in his first season at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham Hotspur could also do with signing a new left-winger. Mikey Moore could be going on loan again after spending last season with Rangers. Manor Solomon is set to depart the club, whilst Wilson Odobert is injury-prone.
At Liverpool, he would face tough competition from new signing Victor Munoz, the young up-and-coming talent Rio Ngumoah, and the experienced Cody Gakpo for a starting spot on the left wing. Schjelderup is a bright young talent, but Liverpool already has good options on the left-wing.
