Liverpool's pre-season campaign starts on Saturday night in Tennessee, with Andoni Iraola taking charge of the Reds for the very first time. The Reds are up against Sunderland at Geodis Park, home of Nashville SC, with the vast majority in attendance doing so to support the 20-times Premier League champions. The 21 year old French centre-back put pen to paper back in January, but spent the remainder of the campaign back on loan at les Rouge et Noirs, only adding to excitement to see him.
Following a miserable loan spell at Aston Villa, wasting an entire season, making just nine appearances, Harvey Elliott is back and looking to stake a claim. Head coach Iraola confirmed that the 23 year old will get pre-season to stake a claim, likely to see minutes both in midfield and attack during this US-tour, showcasing his versatility, as well as his quality.
Which Liverpool players are currently injured?
Stefan Bajčetić and Wataru Endō are close to a return, according to Iraola. Meantime, Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Hugo Ekitiké are also with the rest of the squad in the United States, but only to continue their rehabilitation. Having suffered long-term knee injuries in September, January and April respectively, the trio will remain sidelined for various amounts of times, with Leoni closest to a return.
When will Liverpool's World Cup players be available?
Trio Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak are all flying out to the United States in the next day or two. Thus, they will be available to feature in the upcoming friendlies against Wrexham in New York City on Wednesday and then Leeds United at Soldier Field in Chicago next weekend.
Meantime, Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo will also commence pre-season training on Monday, but will not be available for the fixtures in the USA. These three will report to AXA Training Centre next week, with Iraola citing excessive workloads, particularly in van Dijk's case, as the reason why they've not been asked to travel to America.
Lastly, Alexis Mac Allister and new signing Víctor Muñoz were both involved in the World Cup Final less than a week ago. Thus, neither will be seen until the very end of pre-season.
