Liverpool are still being linked with Monaco's Lamine Camara after his failed move to Chelsea on Deadline Day.
The Senegalese midfielder, 22, has been on the radar of multiple Premier League clubs for some time now, and came close to signing for the Blues before a last minute change of mind.
Twitter account Caught Offside have added that Liverpool are in the lead for Camara's signature after holding initial talks with his representatives.
The Reds aren't the only club interested, with Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea also circling. Monaco now want around £60M after originally agreeing to sell him in the summer for £47M to Chelsea.
To add insult to injury, former Chelsea player Denis Zakaria revealed to Goal that he told Camara to stay at Monaco instead of moving to London.
Since staying at Monaco the midfielder has enjoyed a good run of form, with Monaco undefeated sitting at the top of Ligue 1 with 13 points.
They also beat PSG 2-1 at the start of September.
If the Reds are to add the Senegalese international to their ranks there are going to have to be departures from the club.
With Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa seemingly not in Andoni Iraola's plans, these two would be the main candidates to make way for Camara's signature.
The form of Alexis Mac Allister also complicates things. The Argentine has started the season exceptionally well, and while his contract doesn't run out until 2028, the Reds have a decision to make.
Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai have both signed new contracts in the past few months, and while the Dutch midfielder is out of favour, it would be hard to sell him.
There's no reason the Reds can't have all four midfielders, after all, there's a lot of football to be played.
Liverpool would benefit greatly from someone of Camara's profile - a true defensive midfielder that would allow for greater control and defensive solidity during games.
At times, Liverpool have been far too easy to play through in midfield. This has largely been when Szoboszlai and Gravenberch have been paired together behind Florian Wirtz, but Mac Allister's introduction has improved things in this regard.
As has the introduction of Trey Nyoni into the starting XI or as a substitute.
Nyoni also came on ahead of Gravenberch against Bournemouth - showing once again how highly Iraola rates the young midfielder.
Camara and Nyoni would complement each other very well in the middle of the park and could be the Reds' future in midfield.
It remains to be seen if the Reds pursue this into a concrete offer, but there's a reason Camara didn't sign for Chelsea. And it may be shaped like a Liverbird.
