Growing interest from multiple clubs in confirming the summer signature of Cody Gakpo has done little to change Liverpool’s stance, with the club unwilling to sanction a sale as they continue to build Andoni Iraola’s forward line ahead of the 2026/27 season.

According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, the Dutch international remains a key part of the Liverpool squad, and rather than reducing their attacking options by allowing another established player to depart, the club are actively looking to strengthen in these areas.

After demanding attention with consistent productive displays for his former side PSV Eindhoven and a 2022 World Cup performance that saw him tally three goals in each of the Netherlands’ group stage fixtures, the Reds made their move and confirmed the £35m signing of Gakpo in December of 2022.

As the statistics show, the Dutchman is yet to hit the heights of his time at PSV and has most recently endured his most difficult season under Arne Slot. Despite being the season where he played the most minutes in his career, it was also the season with the least goal contributions since catching the eye in 2021/22.

If it was World Cup performances that initially drew eyes to Gakpo and kickstarted his career with the Reds, then his performances in the 2026 World Cup could represent a fresh start for the Dutch international. Despite going into the tournament off the back of a demoralising season, Gakpo managed four goal contributions across four games and 372 minutes for the Netherlands.

If he could carry that level of attacking productivity over the summer and into the upcoming Premier League campaign, he could be a valuable part of Iraola’s squad.

His time at Liverpool has seen him utilised across multiple positions in the attacking third, primarily playing as a either an inverted winger, with the license to cut in off the left side, or playing more centrally as the team’s sole striker.

That level of versality could be especially valuable for Iraola giventhe aggressive style that he has promised will transfer over from his time at Bournemouth. A high-energy style of football requires heavy rotation, especially with Iraola given a Champions League challenge he has never confronted as a manager before.

Iraola’s time at Bournemouth showed an impressive ability to get the best out of attacking players, with unprecedented numbers produced by Marcus Tavernier and Antoine Semenyo. Both are players that have played off the left wing and are encouraged to cut inside onto their right, a familiar picture to Liverpool fans watching Gakpo this season, but with a less encouraging product.

With attacking depth already lacking, following the departure of Mohamed Salah and the long-term injury of Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool could be forced to rely heavily on the flexibility of Gakpo rather than overplaying Rio Ngumoha at such an early stage in his career.

After Iraola announced that the club are actively seeking activity in the transfer market, one of the areas in which they must be looking to strengthen is in attacking areas.

To let Cody Gakpo depart Anfield would be to let another seasoned player leave at a transitional period. For that reason, a firm message has been sent to Spurs and any other clubs that Gakpo will remain a Liverpool player and the club will hope to get the best out of him for the upcoming season.
