Whilst Liverpool have struggled to retain their Premier League title, Luis Diaz has gone on to flourish in the Bundesliga.
Diaz was a key part of Liverpool's title-winning side last season. In total, he scored 13 goals with seven assists in 36 Premier League games. Despite this impressive record, the left winger did not always start for the Reds.
He was deemed surplus to requirements over the summer and was sold to Bayern Munich for €75 million. This season, Diaz has scored 15 goals with 14 assists for Bayern, who are top of the Bundesliga. They are 12 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund, so they have all but secured the title.
As for Liverpool, they are fifth in the Premier League, and their defense of retaining their title has been abysmal. They are 18 points below the current leaders, Arsenal. They have also been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions, and have a mountain to climb in the quarter-finals of the Champions League as they trail Paris Saint-Germain after the first leg.
Liverpool made a big mistake letting Luis Diaz go
Cody Gakpo, who Liverpool kept instead of Diaz, has managed just six goals and four assists in 30 Premier League games this campaign. Their 17-year-old backup left winger, Rio Ngumoha, has managed to score twice but not make an assist in 14 league matches this season.
Even on the right flank, which has been Mohamed Salah's domain for the last nine years, Liverpool have been less threatening. Salah has managed to score just six goals and set up six in 23 league games this season. He is also set to depart the club at the end of the campaign.
Liverpool's transfer strategy has not been good enough in recent transfer windows. They have let talented players such as Diaz go. However, they spent big on players such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, who have not lived up to expectations.
What goes on at Anfield is not Diaz's problem anymore. He is set to secure the Bundesliga title, and could claim more silverware with Bayern still in the Champions League and DFB-Pokal. Bayern are currently leading Real Madrid 2-1 in their two-legged Champions League quarter-final. They also face Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal.
This summer, Diaz will then be a key part of Colombia's team at the World Cup. Colombia is in Group K for the tournament in North America. They have Portugal in their group, but also DR Congo and Uzbekistan. They should qualify for the knockout stages alongside the Portuguese.
