Liverpool player ratings from Wednesday's embarrassing defeat to PSV

Liverpool matched their worst-ever European home defeat on Wednesday night against a hungrier, more disciplined PSV side.

The Reds went out with a whimper in an embarrassing 4-1 defeat after conceding first again.

That result drops us out of the automatic places for the Round of 16 stage, but that is the least of our worries.

The heat has been turned up another notch on Arne Slot, and the criticisms from the Liverpool fans are becoming harder and harder to ignore.

Giorgi Mamardashvili - 6/10 - It must be a nightmare to play in the sticks with our current back four in front of you. Saved the ones he was supposed to, can’t really blame him for the others. The bottom line is, he shouldn’t have had to see any of them come his way.

Milos Kerkez - 3/10 - Surely has to be dropped until Christmas now. Consistently out of position, negligent tracking back and an obsession with playing the man over the ball. He was found out 2 months ago and hasn’t altered his play slightly. He needs to be taken out of the firing line for his own sake.

Ibou Konate - 4/10 - Started like he had a point to prove, and then after 25 minutes, forgot what that point was. Joe Gomez must be putting in some shocking performances in training to not even get a look-in. Fully to blame for the 4th, and always looked like he had a mistake in him. If we had any sort of trusted cover at centre half, he wouldn't be seeing a minute.

Virgil van Dijk - 5/10 - Looked shaky from the off, and the handball didn’t help. It goes to show that no matter how good you are, you aren’t immune to low confidence. Got the run around practically all night, but could have got on the score sheet. That being said, it was a silly, silly handball.

Curtis Jones - 5.5/10 - At least he progressed the ball well. I’m getting used to seeing an attacking player at right back these days since that's the role we made in this system for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Weird to think our best defensive performances have come at full back by a midfielder, although this wasn’t one of them.

Ryan Gravenberch - 6.5/10 - Always gives his all when called upon, and when we had our only good spell of the game, he was pivotal. Challenging for the ball high up the pitch, recycling the ball quickly and towards the opposition goal and trying to impact the game.

Alexis Mac Allister - 5/10 - You can turn Macca’s confidence on and off like a light switch. Didn’t want the ball for the first 15 minutes, couldn’t get him off it between our goal and half time and was a pedestrian in the second half. Saw glimpses of the player he is tonight, but I blinked, and it was over.

Dominic Szoboszlai - 8/10 - I wish we had 4 Dominic Szoboszlai's. He’s been our best player in almost every single game we’ve played this season and has been the only one not allowing his form to dip. He leads from the front, but he can only do so much. He does everything a midfielder needs to do, but does it at the ultimate level. Sensational player that deserves more.

Cody Gakpo - 6/10 - He did very well for the goal, but he must be a full-back's dream to defend against. The only left winger I’ve ever seen who seems terrified of using his left foot. He is good at getting into strong, attacking positions, but if his signature cut onto his right foot doesn’t work, it leaves us all pulling our hair out.

Hugo Ekitike - 8/10 - Build the team around him. He’s unpredictable and extremely dangerous. A bright spark that knows his £150 million competition is watching his every move. He was a handful for the PSV back line today, but without service, a striker can’t make an impact. When we knocked it through the lines, he came alive; it’s just a shame that it lasted 25 minutes.

Mohammed Salah - 6.5/10 - I added a 0.5 to a very basic 6 as Mo actually ran tonight. He tried to press and close down, but he’s still just a few yards off it. Whilst he isn’t the only one that falls into that category, he needs some time on the sidelines to refresh how he’s playing. Another match without a goal involvement, and they’re starting to add up.

Subs:

Alexander Isak: 6/10 - Showed an occasional glimpse of what he’ll be bringing to Liverpool for the foreseeable future. Holds the ball up well, gets decent shots away from tricky situations and shows for the ball. Falls into the same trap as Hugo; no service, no striker.

Federico Chiesa: - 7.5/10 - Was on the pitch for 15 minutes and was our 2nd best attacking option of the game. He must be scratching his head, wondering what he needs to do to get a spot in the starting XI. A must-start against West Ham on the weekend.
