It is no secret that Liverpool are on the search for a winger before the season begins in just over a weeks time. The Reds lost club legend Mohamed Salah at the end of the last season and are yet to replace the Egyptian King with a marquee signing who can fill his boots.
Transfer links to Paris Saint-Germain stars Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye are growing stronger as the new campaign approaches, suggesting the Liverpool are closer than ever to bringing in at least one fresh face.
Barcola has given his agreement in principle to join Liverpool after speaking with Andoni Iraola and club officials according to reports. Meanwhile, Mbaye is said to be keen on the switch from the European champions who lifted the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night.
Supporters are crying out for reinforcements in attack and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano handed out a positive update on the club on Thursday morning, revealing that Liverpool may bring in not one but two new stars.
“Liverpool could add TWO wingers to the squad, especially if Cody Gakpo end up joining Tottenham.
“Barcola deal remain on as talks are ongoing with PSG, #LFC open to adding one more winger.
“Ibrahima Mbaye on list but currently too expensive.”
Fabrizio Romano has previously suggested the combined cost of Barcola + Mbaye could approach £170M which is out of Liverpool’s budget after the side brought in both Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz earlier this summer for around £85M combined.
However, such a price could be reached if Gakpo does make his way to Tottenham like Romano suggested. Sky Sports reported that Spurs want Gakpo as Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi looks to add a wide attacker.
Liverpool are said to be asking for around ÂŁ60-ÂŁ70M for the Dutchman who grabbed just 9 goals and 6 assists in 52 appearances last season as his form continues to tumble on Merseyside.
In 2023/24 he picked up 16 goals and 6 assists and in 2024/25 he grabbed 18 goals and 6 assists, showing how his contributions in attack have grown worse over the past year.
Tottenham could be a fresh start for 27 year old who could open the door for both Barcola and Mbaye in what would be an ideal situation for manager Andoni Iraola and his attack who will be without Hugo Ekitike until around Christmas.
Barcola would effectively take Gakpo's role as the first-choice left winger whilst Mbaye would slide in on the right to fill the gap that Salah left behind.
Recycling the fee for Gakpo and bringing in the French duo sounds practical and more updates on the situation should arrive ahead of Liverpool’s first game against Newcastle on the 23rd August.
