Liverpool vs Brighton & Hove Albion match preview

Can Liverpool turn an excellent week into a perfect nine days? On Tuesday night, the Reds fought back from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield in the Champions League. Alexis Mac Allister scored twice, while Ronald Araújo and Florian Wirtz were also both on target. They have now won all three Champions League games so far, very much targeting top spot.

Meantime, in the Premier League, Andoni Iraola claimed the most impressive victory of his tenure last weekend. The Reds fought back from a goal down to beat Brentford 2-1 in West London, Víctor Muñoz and Alexander Isak the scorers, admittedly helped by Yehor Yarmolyuk's red card. Liverpool have now won three successive away games in the league, but are seeking a first Premier League home win under Iraola, so will that come here?

Well, that will not be easy, considering Brighton & Hove Albion kick off two places and four points better off. The Seagulls come into this one following four successive Premier League wins, in which they have scored 15 goals and conceded none at all.

The Albion swatted aside champions Arsenal 3-0 last month but, even more memorably, hammered rivals Crystal Palace 5-0 at the Amex last Sunday. They were three goals in front inside ten minutes, with Diego Gómez scoring from the half-way line, while Yasin Ayari, Charalampos Kostoulas and Jack Hinshelwood were all on target later on.

Thus, having lost only once this season, some are touting Brighton as potential title challengers. Fabian Hürzeler's team were held to a goalless draw by Jablonec at Stadion Střelnice in the Conference League on Thursday, but he did heavily rotate his team, so it should not halt their momentum too much.

This will be a serious litmus test for both, so can Brighton claim another serious scalp, or will Liverpool make home advantage count?

Liverpool team news

Andoni Iraola remains without Jeremie Frimpong and Dominik Szoboszlai, but Cody Gakpo did return, starting against Villarreal on Tuesday, his first appearance since suffering an injury on international duty. Miloš Kerkez, Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola and Florian Wirtz were all on the bench in mid-week, but are expected to come in here.

Brighton & Hove Albion team news

As mentioned, Fabian Hürzeler made eight changes in the Czech Republic on Thursday, Pascal Groß and Olivier Boscagli the only outfielders to keep their place, so will largely revert back to last weekend's lineup. Kaoru Mitoma and Stefanos Tzimas both remain out long-term.

Predicted Line-ups

  • Liverpool predicted lineup: Alisson; Araújo, Jacquet, van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Wirtz; Ngumoha, Isak, Barcola.
  • Brighton & Hove Albion predicted lineup: Verbruggen; Kadıoğlu, Vušković, Dunk, Boscagli; Andrés, Groß, Ayari; Gómez, De Cuyper, Kostoulas.

  • Score prediction: Liverpool 2-2 Brighton & Hove Albion.
