Can Liverpool deliver when the world is watching? Almost everyone will be willing the Reds to beat Manchester City on Sunday, in light of the Sky Blues' recent "guilty of all charges" verdict. However, following Andoni Iraola's confirmation that both Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak will miss the game due to injuries suffered on international duty, Kopites may be feeling somewhat pessimistic.

These fixtures, particularly those at Anfield, have become must-watch events, so can Liverpool fans take heart from their recent results when the Citizens have visited Merseyside?

Liverpool vs Manchester City: Last five results at Anfield

  • 1 December 2024: Liverpool 2-0 Manchester City - Cody Gakpo & Mohamed Salah.
  • 10 March 2024: Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City - Alexis Mac Allister.

Particularly during the Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola era, Liverpool boasted an excellent home record against Manchester City. In fact, since a famous win under Brendan Rodgers in 2013/14, the Reds have claimed victory in ten of 15 home games against the Sky Blues.

The 4-3 victory in January 2018, in which the Reds ran riot before Bernardo Silva and İlkay Gündoğan scored late, immediately springs to mind. Three months later, Klopp's team again demolished Guardiola's side, 3-0 up inside half an hour en route to the Champions League Final in Kyiv.

To burst the positivity bubble a little bit, Man City did win 2-1 at Anfield last season. Arne Slot's side seemed set for a very impressive victory, Dominik Szoboszlai lashing home a long-range free kick just 15 minutes from time. However, Silva soon equalised, before Erling Braut Håland converted a stoppage time penalty; Szoboszlai was then sent off in bizarre circumstances at the death.

This though is an extremely rare win at Anfield for the Sky Blues, just their second of the cheating era. The other came in lockdown, a 4-1 demolition of Klopp's side in February 2021, but this was behind closed doors when the Reds were really struggling.

February was Man City's first away win over Liverpool, with fans in attendance, since May 2003; Milan Baroš broke the deadlock for the hosts that day, before Nicolas Anelka bagged a second half brace for the late Kevin Keegan's team.

Nevertheless, those inside Anfield on Sunday will be desperate to roar their team onto another memorable home win.
