It might only be the second match of the season, but Liverpool’s first home match of the season is a top-of-the-table clash in the Women’s Super League as Martin Ho’s Tottenham Hotspur come to the St Helen’s Stadium.

The Reds sit pretty in pole position after their 4-0 victory over Charlton in the league opener got them off to a flying start. Meanwhile, Tottenham’s comfortable 3-1 win over a new-look West Ham side sits them in third, just behind Manchester City, solely on alphabetical order.

The summer window has already proved fruitful for both teams. Gareth Taylor’s side were impressive in all departments in their opening fixture. New goalkeeper Khiara Keating was left with minimal work but nevertheless kept a clean sheet, while winger Vivien Endemann won player of the match on debut.

As for Tottenham, Kirsty Hanson wasted no time in picking up where she left off last season. The Scottish forward was the WSL’s third-highest goalscorer last campaign all the while playing for a laboured Aston Villa side who finished ninth. Taylor and Liverpool will be to keep her quiet on Sunday.

Recent Form

Liverpool (Home Side): Opening matches of the season don’t get much better than the Reds’ 4-0 victory over Charlton last week. Captain Grace Fisk at the double, new star winger Vivien Endemann was a constant threat down the right and a penalty from Cornelia Kapocs rounded off a perfect display from start to finish – one which places Liverpool top of the WSL table

It’s a result that makes Liverpool favourites coming into this game, but that is despite losing their last three home matches in all competitions.

Spurs promise to be a much sterner test than the newly-promoted Addicks and will allow both fans and Taylor a chance to gauge how far his team have come since last season.

Tottenham Hotspur (Away Side): Like the Reds, Martin Ho’s side also come off the back of a convincing win. New signing from Aston Villa Kirsty Hanson lit up Spurs’ WSL  opener, bagging herself a brace in a 3-1 win at home to West Ham. Norwegian starlet Signe Gaupset was also among the goals as part of an impressive all-round display.

Under Ho, Spurs have become the dark horses of the league - often pulling off upsets in one-off games rather than stringing together good results to break up the so-called ‘Big Three’. At points last season it seemed that they could break into Europe, but that was quickly dispelled before long. A 2-1 home defeat to Everton and a 5-2 loss to rivals Arsenal compounded their downfall.

As visitors they are underdogs again here, but once again, Ho & co. will be looking to upset the odds and leapfrog Liverpool in the table.

Liverpool team news: Manager Gareth Taylor has confirmed that the team picked up no further injuries during the win at Charlton – only “a few little niggles here and there” after playing 90 minutes for the first time, to use his words.

As a result, the injury list remains the same. Maizie Trueman and Sophie Roman Haug continue their recovery, though they are making good strides toward full fitness according to the boss. Lucy Parry, Mao Itamura and Mari Ward are also absent, but hope to return to training soon, while Zara Shaw is yet to return from the U20 World Cup.

The list of injuries means that Sam Kerr is expected to deputise at right-back again on Sunday. The midfielder impressed there against Charlton, keeping a clean sheet in the process.

Tottenham Hotspur team news: New signing Alice Sombath is “touch and go” for the trip the St Helens stadium according to Ho. The French international is yet to make her competitive debut for Spurs since arriving from OL Lyonnes in July, but she trained fully on both Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s match.

Jessica Naz, Maite Oroz and Lenna Gunning-Williams took part in training during the week but look doubtful for the weekend. Clare Hunt also continues to recover from injury.

Another new signing Shakeira Martinez could also be in line for a first start after featuring for the final half hour against her former side West Ham. She will battle with Cathinka Tandberg for the starting striker spot.

Predicted Line-ups

• Liverpool predicted lineup: Keating; Kerr; Fisk; Clark; Bernabé; Nagano; MacLean; Endemann; Holland; Kapocs; Olsson.

• Tottenham Hotspur predicted lineup: Kop; Dijkstra; Koga; Sombath; Nildém; Summanen; Spence; Hanson; Gaupset; Vinberg; Martinez.

What the managers have said

Gareth Taylor (Liverpool): “It is a good start for us but that's all it is, and we now need to build on that with Tottenham coming up on Sunday. We are really looking forward to being back in front of our fans at St Helens Stadium. It will be a challenging game but we are looking forward to it.”

Martin Ho (Tottenham Hotspur): “They've got some really good players. You can see in terms of their confidence has flowed; their momentum and enthusiasm are good. We need to make sure that we're at our best. It'll be a tight game, I feel. We need to make sure in those games that the small margins and whoever executes better will win the game.”
