Liverpool suffered a disappointing 4-2 defeat to Leeds United in their latest pre-season friendly, but teenage midfielder Trey Nyoni once again emerged with plenty of credit after another composed display under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
The 19-year-old has been a near-ever-present for Liverpool on their pre-season tour of the United States, featuring in all three matches against Sunderland, Wrexham, and Leeds United. That level of game time is a strong signal of the faith Iraola already has in the young midfielder.
While the final scoreline against Leeds was frustrating, Nyoni played a key role in an impressive Liverpool first half that saw the Reds go into the break 2-0 up, before wholesale substitutions changed the complexion of the game entirely.
Operating centrally, Nyoni continued to show why he's regarded as one of Liverpool's brightest young prospects, and why he has a genuine chance of breaking into Arne Iraola's first team plans this season.
There was plenty to admire in his all-round game: winning possession repeatedly and looking physically sharper than he did last season. One standout moment saw the England youth international shoulder off Leed’s 6'1" striker Lukas Nmecha, underlining the physical development he has clearly worked on.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the match, Nyoni opened up on his off-season preparation:
"Obviously over the summer I knew I had a lot to improve, so I've tried to work on it over the summer and come back and give myself the best chance possible this pre-season. Obviously, I still need to keep improving, keep developing each game but so far it's been all right."
The contrast between Liverpool's two halves against Leeds was stark. The Reds produced fluid, attacking football before the break, with young forward Luke Chambers on the scoresheet before conceding four unanswered goals as a much-changed, inexperienced second half XI struggled to adapt.
That second-half unit looked short on tactical familiarity with Iraola's demanding new system, which ask full backs to overlap aggressively into the final third, the forward line to press high up the pitch and the back line to hold a high defensive line
Adapting to an Iraola-style Liverpool means learning to cover the spaces left behind by presses and overlapping runs which is a huge tactical ask, particularly for Liverpool's box-to-box midfielders. It's a reminder that this pre-season may look shakier than the routine wins Liverpool fans are used to against sides like Leeds.
Despite the result, Nyoni took his expanded midfield role in his stride, insisting the Liverpool squad is still adapting to life under Iraola:
"Today, I think in the first half we played really well. I just think in the second half we lost our way a bit. But we're still learning the system, so we'll keep progressing.
"I think obviously there's a few new guys and obviously a new manager as well, so I feel like the bond of being there together is the core at the end of the day. It's been a good tour.
"Liverpool is a massive club so it's expected, to be fair, but the fan base has been really, really good. The support that we've had, we can feel it, so we appreciate it."
With senior stars including Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, and summer signings Victor Muñoz and Jeremy Jacquet still to feature, there's plenty of optimism inside Anfield that performances will sharpen up before the final pre-season friendlies against Monaco and Como.
For Nyoni personally, this US tour has been a genuine breakthrough. Liverpool have a strong recent track record of academy graduates using pre-season as a launchpad into the first team, and the midfielder looks well-placed to follow that path.
With Champions League football returning to Anfield and uncertainty still surrounding Curtis Jones' Liverpool future, Iraola may soon find himself leaning on Trey Nyoni to provide valuable midfield depth in what promises to be a demanding season ahead.
