Luis Suarez was biding his time to greatness in his early years at Anfield but had an incredible year in 2011 with his native Uruguay.
Another with fine tournament pedigree, Uruguay were superb during the tournament, knocking out joint favorites Argentina in the Quarter-Finals.
Not content with a fantastic brace in the Semi-Final victory over Peru, Suarez dominated the final with an incredible display, starting with the first half.
The striker had, and made, several early chances before lashing home the opening goal to give his side the lead.
His fine performance continued with an assist for Diego Forlan and his country won the Copa America for the fifteenth time, a record only recently beaten.
It was also the first tournament following his controversial World Cup against Ghana the previous year.
