Mohamed Salah set for medical as Trabzonspor move nears completion after Liverpool exit

After months of speculation surrounding the future of Mohamed Salah, his next destination has been confirmed, with the Liverpool legend set to continue his remarkable career in Turkiye.  

As reported by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Turkish side Trabzonspor have reached an agreement with the Egyptian King following his departure from Anfield. 

The Turkish club generally regarded as the fourth-biggest power in the country behind Istanbul giants Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas did little to hide their excitement on Tuesday evening.

Trabzonspor officially confirmed the move via a short statement on their X account:

"Negotiations have begun regarding the transfer of professional footballer Mohamed Salah to our club.

By Tuesday night, the Turkish club released detailed travel arrangements confirming when Salah will touch down to complete his medical and formalise the two-year agreement:

“Professional footballer Mohamed Salah, with whom we have begun transfer negotiations, will be at Istanbul Atatürk Airport General Aviation Terminal at 12:00 on Wednesday, August 5 (tomorrow).

“The player is scheduled to arrive in Trabzon on the same day in the evening hours. The time and other details regarding the welcome program in Trabzon will be shared with the public through our club’s official communication channels during the day.”

The news brings an emotional conclusion to one of the greatest chapters in Liverpool’s modern history. 

It was in March that Liverpool confirmed that Salah would be leaving Anfield, allowing the forward to end his stay a year earlier than expected in pursuit of a fresh challenge. 

Since closing the door on his historic nine-year stay on Merseyside, speculation surrounding the Egyptian’s next destination has been relentless.

Having ultimately seen discussions over a switch to Turkish outfit Besiktas break down, the 34-year-old’s availability predictably set off alarm bells across Europe, Major League Soccer (MLS), and the Saudi Pro League with key decision-makers monitoring his situation closely before a resolution was reached

Instead, Salah has opted to remain in European football. For Trabzonspor, this is more than a marquee signing but a statement of intent.  

The Black Sea club enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, finishing third in the Turkish Super League to secure UEFA Europa League football while also lifting the Turkish Cup.  

The Egyptian, whilst yet to win the European competition, has tasted Europa League football before, having reached the semifinals of the tournament with Basel in 2013 and again with Fiorentina in 2015.  

The move to the Trabzon club offers the 34-year-old to get his hands on one of the few trophies in football’s elite tier that he is yet to lay his hands on, and his signature may even make them a favourite for the competition. 

Their squad already contains familiar Premier League faces, including Andrè Onana, who will be extending his loan stay for the upcoming season alongside former Manchester City and Montenegro international Stefan Savić, former Southampton striker Paul Onuachu and former Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram.  

Yet, none possess the global profile or proven pedigree of Salah. 

The Egyptian leaves Liverpool as one of the greatest players to ever pull on the famous red shirt. During his unforgettable 9-year spell on Merseyside, Salah ended what had become a thirty-year wait for the Premier League to return to Anfield and scored a penalty in the 2019 Champions League final to make the Reds European Champions for the sixth time. 

Individually, he cemented his place among football’s elite by claiming four Premier League Golden Boots, rewriting club records and producing countless moments that Liverpool supporters will cherish forever. 

Replacing a player of that calibre is virtually impossible, and there is little doubt Liverpool fans will feel the void left by their No. 11, even with the club eyeing a big move for French international Bradley Barcola. 

While a new era begins under Andoni Iraola at Anfield, many supporters will undoubtedly keep a close eye on Salah’s journey in Turkiye, hoping to see one of the club’s greatest-ever players continue to thrive. 

For Trabzonspor, the possibilities are enormous. 

The big three of Istanbul have long dominated Turkish football, but Salah’s arrival has the potential to shift the balance. His winning mentality, elite experience and relentless eye for goal could transform Trabzonspor from Europa League qualifiers into genuine title challengers. 

Beyond the domestic impact, Salah’s signing is a significant moment for Turkish football as a whole. Few players with his reputation have arrived in the Süper Lig while still capable of competing at the highest European level.  

His presence is expected to increase global attention on the league while providing Trabzonspor with invaluable quality as they prepare for another campaign in continental competition. 

The Turkish side will have to compete in a playoff to achieve Europa League football, or will drop to the Conference League. Either way, the prospect of the Egyptian landing on English soil once more to play one of the Premier League's European contenders in Sunderland, Bournemouth or Crystal Palace is both nostalgic and exciting.

Nine months after Salah’s emotional farewell message confirmed his Liverpool departure, the next chapter has officially begun. 

Anfield may no longer be his home, but Mohamed Salah’s story is far from over. If history has taught football fans anything, it is never to bet against the Egyptian King writing another unforgettable chapter, this time on the shores of the Black Sea.
