While it may not be the most exciting news of the summer for Liverpool supporters, continuity in the goalkeeping department is one less problem for Andoni Iraola to worry about. On Thursday, the club confirmed that third-choice Freddie Woodman has signed a new long-term contract.
James Pearce of the Athletic reports that this will keep the 29 year old on Merseyside until 2029, labelling him a "hugely popular character with both players and staff". Speaking to the offical website, Woodman expressed his delight at the news:
"I’m absolutely delighted, to be honest... for... there to be an offer for me from the club to stay here longer, I was made up. I’m just so happy that I could re-sign here and be a part of this amazing club... me and my family are delighted. "
Woodman is an experienced goalkeeper, having made 282 senior appearances in his career, almost half of which came for Preston North End, also representing Swansea City, Kilmarnock, Crawley Town, Newcastle United, Aberdeen and Bournemouth.
When he first arrived at AXA Training Centre last summer, he surely did not imagine playing as much as he did. However, towards the end of the campaign, with Alisson already sidelined, Giorgi Mamardashvili then got injured at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and his Premier League debut for the club came in a derby away at Everton.

After Mamardashvili was forced to withdraw, due to a collision during the action that saw Beto equalise, Woodman came on at a raucous Bramley-Moore Dock. However, he then helped the Reds to a famous 2-1 derby victory, with van Dijk heading home the stoppage time winner.
A week later, Woodman also started the 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Anfield, before being part of a chaotic 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford that was not his fault. He has very much proved himself to be a capable deputy, even if, as third choice, he is never supposed to see much action.
Well, it is set to be a busy summer for new manager Iraola as well as sporting director Richard Hughes and his recruitment team. The Reds need to sign a centre-back, a right-back, a defensive midfielder and at least one attacker before the window slams shut on 1 September. However, with Alisson going nowhere and Woodman tied down, the goalkeeping department seems set.
Speaking at Chicago Fire Endeavor Health Performance Center on Tuesday, Liverpool's home for their US tour, Iraola had this to say about his goalkeepers:
"I’m very happy with the situation we have right now in the goalkeeping area. We have Alisson, we have Giorgi [Mamardashvili]. W have the guarantee of those three here. Freddie [Woodman] played some games in the past season, I think it’s a guarantee for us."
Even with Ármin Pécsi having joined Hartberg on loan, and Vítězslav Jaroš likely to depart too, either permanently or on loan, Liverpool's trio of goalkeepers, Alisson, Mamardashvili and Woodman, has to rank among the very best of any club on the planet.
Thus, it must be a relief for Iraola that he does not have to worry about that, especially considering there is so much else to do.
