One Liverpool player has no choice but to step up following Hugo Ekitike's injury

Losing Hugo Ekitike is a huge blow for Liverpool, but it now gives an opportunity to a player to finally prove his worth.

Hugo Ekitike suffered a horror injury in the Champions League last night, which has ruled him out for the rest of the season. It is now time for Alexander Isak to finally prove his worth in a Liverpool shirt.

After just 31 minutes in Liverpool's defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield, Ekitike had to be taken off. His Achilles problem is serious, and he will miss the World Cup, too.

The Reds spent big last summer on multiple players, and even Ekitike cost £79 million from Eintracht Frankfurt. However, he has been one bright spark for the Reds in a disappointing campaign. The Frenchman has scored 17 goals with four assists in 45 games in all competitions this season.

Other massive signings, such as Isak and Florian Wirtz, have underperformed, which has led to an abysmal attempt at Liverpool defending their Premier League title. It will be a season without silverware as the Reds are now out of the Champions League, the FA Cup, and were beaten in the EFL Cup.

It is time for Alexander Isak to step up for Liverpool

Liverpool's best hope now is to make sure they secure a Champions League place. They are currently fifth in the Premier League, but still have to play Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Chelsea in their remaining six games. They also have the Merseyside derby against Everton this weekend. Their other fixtures against Brentford and Crystal Palace could also prove to be problematic.

Without Ekitike, the Reds lack a huge goal threat, but it is time for Isak to live up to expectations. The signing of Isak dragged on last summer as he went on strike at Newcastle United. He finally joined the Reds on deadline day for a British record £125 million deal.

Due to Isak not having a pre-season as he sat out of Eddie Howe's side, he had a slow start to his Liverpool career. A broken fibula put a stop to any momentum he might have gained after scoring in a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

In total, Isak has found the back of the net just three times and provided one assist in 19 games in all competitions this season. The Swedish striker has only just returned to action, but has a long way to go to prove he is worth the astronomical fee that Liverpool spent on him. He can start by scoring the goals to secure a Champions League place for the Reds.
