3. Liverpool finally lands Virgil van Dijk

Entering the 2016-17 season, Liverpool and a still emerging Jurgen Klopp were in desperate need of a defensive leader.

There was a Dutch centre-half plying his trade at Southampton (Because of course), and that player was Virgil van Dijk. He publicly declared his desire to join the Reds but when it was reported he had agreed a deal to join, Southampton filed a complaint citing tampering concerns.

That's one way to sabotage your players desire to leave. So, Liverpool backed off and the season began anew. However, just months later, in January 2017, both clubs were back at the table and this time a record deal was agreed.

Klopp had his defensive stalwart to implement his vision while the Saints pocketed a then-record transfer fee for a defender. Honestly, one could say both sides won this.

However, van Dijk went on to become the best defender in the world, was Runner-up for the Ballon d'or, has won everything possible and is now the club Captain. A huge win for the Reds indeed.
