As we inch closer and closer to Sunday's massive showdown at Old Trafford with title implications once again, I felt it was a good time to take a look back at the last few years in this fixture in the Premier League and see what that held.

The verdict, a mixed bag of footballing chaos because what else would it be between Liverpool and Manchester United?

Let's take a walk down memory lane to see how the games went.

We start our tour with the most recent Premier League meeting between these two sides this past December. This was a frustrating affair that saw Liverpool end the match with 2.3 expected goals and United a sterling 0.8.

It was clear on the day that Manchester United came to Anfield hoping for a point at best and the football gods obliged them as Liverpool could not turn their dominance into any goal.

34 shots for the Reds to only 6 for their visitors tells the story of who came to play in this one.

We all will remember this one for a long, long time as it was an almost perfect day at Anfield. Liverpool began cutting through the Untied defense from the beginning and the scoring was begun by Cody Gakpo just before halftime following a beautiful cut inside and superb finish.

A brace from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah along with another from Gakpo and one from Roberto Firmino would be the final tally.

They were all largely class goals or instances of Liverpool pouncing on poor defending from United on multiple occasions.

Earlier in the season, Liverpool fell at Old Trafford in a close and tight battle. This match was more emblematic of the rivalry that we have come to know over the years.

Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were on the scoresheet for while a late Salah goal merely made things a bit more interesting just past the 80th minute. James Milner was absolutely cooked by Sancho in this one as he was sent flying by with a smooth dribble from the United winger.

A tough day for the Reds early in the season this one was.

April 19, 2022 - Liverpool 4 Manchester United 0

This was a wonderful April day at Anfield as Salah bagged a brace and Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz each scored one of their own as the Reds strolled to victory on the day.

The starting midfield three for Liverpool in this one are now all gone or soon to be gone in a few months: Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho.

Milner and Naby Keita were the replacement midfielders used so it shows the revolution that has led to where we were today with Liverpool's current midfield dynamic. This feels almost like an age ago, but it was merely two years and now things have drastically changed.

This means that United have only scored in one of the previous five Premier League meetings with Liverpool. Thank goodness they have the FA Cup or else this would have been one way traffic in recent years.

This particlurar fall day saw Salah secure a hattrick for himself in devasting fashion. The aforementioned Keita was also a goal scorer as was Diogo Jota.

It was another thoroughly dominating performance from the Reds over one of their biggest rivals in the game today. The starting midfield trio of Hendo-Keita-Milner ran the show and pulled all the strings on this day.
