Liverpool's first signing of the window may not play for them this season.
With Liverpool failing to sign Martin Zubimendi, the club still has zero incomings this summer. As of now, the Reds are on track to be the only club in the Top five European leagues to not sign a single player in this summer transfer window. Could that really happen?
Various reports suggest Liverpool will not return to the market to find an alternate option for Zubimendi, but they may have found a long-term replacement for Alisson.
Liverpool Transfer News: Alisson's long-term replacement identified
Fabrizio Romano reported this morning that Liverpool has agreed to terms with Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Georgian shot-stopper is reportedly a fan of a potential move to Anfield, although the expectation is that he would head out on loan.
It has been suggested that Premier League side Bournemouth would want to take Mamardashvili on loan, but a loan immediately cannot happen as it is against the Premier League rules. A club is prohibited from signing a player and loaning him out to a fellow Premier League club in the same window.
However, Liverpool could find a way around this and have an agreement for Valencia to send Mamardashvili on loan to Bournemouth before a permanent transfer to the Reds in 2025. Fabrizio Romano is suggesting this is the plan for all the clubs involved should a transfer deal be struck.
It is not out of the question that the Georgia international is loaned back to Valencia either, but the Spanish club just signed Stole Dimitrievski from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, where the Macedonian was a regular starter, signalling perhaps they think Mamardashvili has played his last match for the club.
A good question to ask is what this means for Liverpool backup Caoimhin Kelleher. The Irishman is seeking a move away to become a number-one starter, but there seems to be little interest as of now. A signing of Mamardashvili by Liverpool would, of course, let Kelleher know that he is not viewed as Alisson's long-term replacement at Anfield.
Even at 31 years of age, Alisson Becker is still performing as a top Premier League keeper, meaning Giorgi Mamardashvili may have to wait multiple seasons for his turn to potentially become Liverpool's number one should he make his way to England this summer.
Mamardashvili has performed exceptionally well with his national team in recent times, helping them both reach Euro 2024 and also having some outstanding performances at the tournament itself.
