LFC Academy: U21 Reds continue surge towards Premier League 2 Top 4
The Liverpool U-21 side continued it's good run of form as they have gone 3-1-1 in their last 5 to pull within one point of the Top 4 in the Premier League 2 table. The young Reds have a game in hand on some of the teams above them as well.
On Sunday, while the Senior side contested an FA Cup Quarterfinal for the ages, the Liverpool U-21's were comfortably defeating Manchester City U-21 by a score of 2-0.
It was the 17-year old Irishman Trent Kone-Doherty that scored the opener from his left-wing position just after the hour mark. Kone-Doherty has started 3 of the last 4 for Liverpool U-21 as he continues to flash some high potential upside.
Central defender Rhys Williams, who we remember from his heroics a few years ago being called up to the Liverpool 1st team during their injury crisis, would score the second on the day.
Williams had a failed loan spell with Scottish side Aberdeen earlier this season where he was not featured and did not get the growth needed.
The club recalled him and he has been playing well for the Academy side as he continues his methodical development.
Kaide Gordon, Lewis Koumas and Fabian Mrozek were among the starters for Liverpool. It's especially nice to see Gordon getting valuable minutes as he missed a lot of time with injury early in the season. Every minute counts for him.
Koumas is the Liverpool U-21 leading scorer with 7 goals from only 8 matches played as he has been ruthless in front of goal at this level.
English teenager Terrence McLaughlin-Miles has made the most appearances (15) and starts (14) as he has made the left-back spot his own for player-manager Jay Spearing.
Following the international break, Liverpool U-21 will face off with Blackburn U-21, Manchester United U-21 and Sunderland U-21 as they look to keep climbing the PL 2 table.
Liverpool U-21 next kickoff will be April 6, 2024 against Blackburn U-21 at 11;00am GMT.
