This activity has to be the most fun but most difficult activity out there. You are the supporter of a club that has experienced immense success over the decades.
Even during the lean trophyless years you have watched talented players who have endeared themselves to the fans. How do you compare between eras. Football has changed and evolved so much. The age of the Best XI selector comes into play as well.
With the above in mind I have put together my best Liverpool XI. I have kept it in the bounds of players who I have seen.
I have selected only one player who played just before I started to watch Liverpool FC. See if you can guess who it is.
I have also selected an alternative for each position. The alternative selections have looser bounds in terms of qualifying criteria for selection.
Goalkeeper - Alisson
This was quite a straightforward selection. The nearest rival played sometime before me watching Liverpool.
I have gone with Alisson Becker. A world class goalkeeper who has won it all. He has kept us in games in pivotal moments.
Not only that, but he also scored the winner to propel Liverpool to a top 4 spot in the premier league. I should mention Allison’s nearest rival is in this selection. Ray Clemence, who was a serial winner with many league and European cup titles. He provided a solid foundation for the rest of the team.
Right Back - Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold walks straight into this team. Just like Allison he is one of the best in the world in this position right now and has the medals to back it up.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is not just any right-back. He is pivotal to the way the rest of the team play. That was unheard of before Trent came onto the scene.
His delivery and passing range dictates the way Liverpool play. To borrow a phrase from Jamie Carragher “It is like having De Bruyne playing at Right Back." In terms of an alternative world class right back to play for Liverpool during my time was German international Markus Babbel.
The treble winner in 2001 was unlucky to suffer a life-threatening illness which curtailed his playing career.
