3. James Milner - July 1, 2015 - Free Transfer

The next entrant on our list is yet another versatile option that would see his role expand once Klopp would take over.

If any player signed for free goes on to play 332 times for a club while also wearing the armband on several occasions, you can absolutely call that a successful transaction.

Milner was already a seasoned pro when he joined Liverpool following the expiry of his Manchester City contract in the summer of 2015 and brought that experience and leadership to the Reds from his first day at the club.

He would become the vice-Captain under Jordan Henderson and because of various injury crises, we would see him play both fullback spots and all across the midfield. His professionalism endeared him to the coaching staff and fans alike.

While his game was never flashy during his time in Red, he always seemed to be in the right spot whenever the moment called for it.

He was also the best penalty taker in the squad during his tenure as well. Klopp extending him well into his late thirties was a reflection of his impact at the club and showed that Liverpool more than got their money's worth on a free deal.
