Ranking some of the best Liverpool January Signings
While the winter transfer window is only a a month long, clubs can still drastically change the fortunes around their squads. While it is not always a hit, there are impact players to be had at all times of the year.
In this piece, I'm going to take you on a pleasant trip down memory lane. To quote Fab, Here we go!
January 2011 - Luis Suarez Signs from Ajax in £22.7 million move
"El Pistolero" had a big job as he came in with Fernando Torres departing for Chelsea. They were massive shoes to fill but Suarez more than lived up to the moment. He took his game to another level while at Liverpool scoring some outrageous goals.
While he was never without controversy while at the club, which ultimately led to an early departure, he still left a mark at the club.
Very few forwards have been as dynamic as the Uruguayan in the history of the Reds. There can be no greater compliment.
January 2018 - Reds get their anchor, Virgil Van Dijk for £75 million
When Liverpool acquired the towering Dutchman, they were a team that had no problems scoring goals but they also were conceding at an alarming rate as well.
Van Dijk absolutely changed that almost immediately and he marshalled the defense that would become the focal point of an influx of silverware over the next 5 years. Today, he is the Captain and still one of the best defenders in the world.
January 2013 - A unheralded Brazilian joins from Inter who will shape the clubs future
Coutinho cost a mere £8.5 million when he arrive to Anfield as a 20-year old. 54 goals later and a meteoric rise saw him become one of the brightest stars in world football.
He scored some big-time goals for Liverpool in big matches throughout his career in England. This is why it was a somewhat bittersweet moment when Barcelona came calling for him. However, the astronomical £146 million fee paid by the Spanish giants more than made up for it.
This was money that was used to purchase the likes of Alisson and Fabinho, two key cogs in the spine of the future Premier League winning side.
January 2013 - LFC get a bargain in the form of a discontent Chelsea striker, Daniel Sturridge
When "Studge" joined Liverpool from Chelsea, he was seen as a project player at best that was not committed to reaching his ceiling.
Yet, once he pulled on the famous Red shirt, it was like he became a totally different player. Sturridge would go on to form a lethal partnership with the aforementioned Suarez as Liverpool took Premier League defenses by storm.
Sadly, as the rest of his career went, it was injuries that slowed his time with the Reds. He became less available as time wore on and eventually the club moved on without him to their next phase.
He was still a tremendous servant for the club and well worth the money paid for him.
