Joel Matip - 2016
The last big free transfer for Liverpool, which is crazy to say since it was over eight years ago when Matip signed a pre-contract agreement with the Reds in February of 2016. Matip replaced the outgouing Martin Skrtel that summer. Veteran defender Kolo Toure who started the Europa League final against Sevilla also left, but on a free transfer.
After originally starting the 2016-17 season on the bench, a loss to Burnley saw Matip enter the starting XI at right centre-back, a position he would hold throughout his tenure at Liverpool, barring injuries and his last couple of seasons, of course.
Like Milner, Joel Matip won everything with Liverpool and formed an outstanding centre-back partnership duo with Virgil van Dijk, one of the better ones seen in recent memory.
So, the next question is who will be Liverpool's next big free transfer? If history will have its way we may still be a while away from this signing!
