Liverpool 9-0 Crystal Palace (1989)
Thought we’d peaked with seven? Liverpool’s joint-biggest top-flight win came against Crystal Palace in September 1989, and it was nine.
Steve Nicol opened the scoring for Liverpool with a cute left-footed finish. Palace hit the post at 1-0 and were left to rue, a terrific chip from Steve McMahon added the second, Ian Rush clipped in three, before Gary Gilliespie’s header finished Palace off at four.
Playing towards the Kop in the second-half, Liverpool added five through Peter Beardsley, John Aldridge’s penalty was six before Palace missed a penalty.
A textbook John Barnes free-kick was the seventh, A thunderous Glenn Hysen header was eight, and nine saw Steve Nicol, the only repeat scorer, rush in at the back post to conclude proceedings.
Liverpool’s 9-0 win was a crucial victory on the way to winning the 1990 First Division title, their last for 30 years.
