On May 11th, 2002, Liverpool thrashed Ipswich Town 5-0 in the league, which included a John Arne Riise brace. The loss for Ipswich mathematically sealed their relegation to the Football League First Division, now known as the EFL Championship.

Kieran McKenna's Ipswich side will want to make a statement in their league opener, especially at home in front of their supporters. Despite the significant gaps in squad quality, it would not be the biggest surprise if the Reds have a nervy start in what will be expected to be an excellent atmosphere for the first Liverpool match of the campaign.
