Liverpool are really rather limping towards the end of the season, which is intensifying the pressure on manager Arne Slot. On Wednesday night, the Reds were comprehensively beaten 2-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Parc des Princes, suffering a fourth successive away defeat.
Désiré Doué broke the deadlock, his shot looping over Giorgi Mamardashvili after deflecting via Virgil van Dijk, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia rounded the goalkeeper to score a second after the break. Les Rouge-et-Bleu had 18 attempts, six on target, created four big chances and racked up an xG figure of 2.35. In contrast, the men from Merseyside had no shots on target, no big chances and an xG total of 0.17; considering this, 2-0 was probably a great result for the visitors.
As already mentioned, this was the Reds' fourth consecutive loss on the road, previously beaten by Manchester City in the FA Cup, Brighton in the Premier League and Galatasaray in İstanbul. Fair to say, this is not a regular occurrence for the club.

This ongoing sequence is only the tenth occasion in half a century that Liverpool have lost four successive away matches. This most recently happened towards the end of the 2011/12 season under Sir Kenny Dalglish, when the Reds finished eighth, albeit they did overcome Cardiff on penalties in the EFL Cup Final during this sequence, offering some respite.
Six of the ten streaks, including that one, feature defeats at Old Trafford. Well, assuming they are dumped out by les Parisiens next Tuesday, Slot's team will have three games away from Anfield remaining. These are a first-ever Merseyside derby at Bramley-Moore Dock the following Sunday, a trip to Manchester United on 3 May and a clash with Aston Villa a fortnight later.
Well, against Everton, they'll be seeking to avoid a fifth straight away loss for the first time since March 1999, having not lost six on the spin since April '92. In fact, not since 1954 have the Reds lost seven on the spin away from home but, given how tough those remaining fixtures are, could they match that? Should this come to pass, one would assume they will have failed to qualify for next season's Champions League, and last year's title-winning coach Slot would surely be out of a job.
